Just went up to Klau Mine(by Paso Robles) today and did a little amount of exploring. This spot looks to be good for gobblers, hogs, and deer;lots of good cover and little ponds. While walking up a hill saw some hog, deer, and coyote tracks. Im gonna really check it next weekend.

Let us know what you find out. I just got my BLM map for that area and am interested in finding all of the public land I can to hunt on.

If you're talking about Klaus Mine road, west and south of Paso Robles (you can get to it off of Vineyard), most if not all of that area is private land. We used to (the guy sold the ranch 3 years ago and moved to a HUGE ranch in New Mexico) hunt on a 240 acre ranch right off that road for deer every year. They had blacktail deer, turkey and quail, but did not have any hogs at all (which suprised the heck out of me). If I recall, the owner said the pigs hug the barley crops east and North of that area (most of the area is volunteer oats, no barley), but I would like to hope that you'd be able to find some pigs holed up around the grape vineyards.

If there is BLM land up there, that is great news and could be a real good honeyhole for you. Best of luck, but be careful that you stay on BLM land for sure (or get permission to hunt of course).

Klau Mine does show as BLM land on the 1994 BLM map. I wonder if there is a more current map. I just bought mine from BLM and expected it to be more current than 1994.

Good Luck

Loye,

I check out a BLM area in Paso Robles that bordering privae land. I am not sure if it is the same one your talking about. The BLM land that I went to you had to hike there were no roads.

I went to Klau today. First of all there are no real places you go nto it without going on someones property. I tried to get to it on the other side, the same deal.Figures the map was made in 1994(BLM needs to update their maps!) Im gonna look for some more BLM next weekend somewhere near me.
Qbn Hunter was this BLM westof Paso Robles ?

I'm puzzled as to how there can be public land that the public can't access. How is this possible?

Greenleaf, it is possible and not uncommon in California and other Western States.

Generally the best land for grazing and farming is private property and the blm land is more hilly, dry. brushy etc. These blm spots are like islands in a sea of private property.

And private propetery owners do not have to provide access to the blm land.

I have heard of people purposely buying land that fronts national forest or blm land, therefore locking out everyone else. Prime examples are Ricky Schroder and Ted Turner, is what I have heard from other people

I posted a thread a while back about a helicopter fly in service out of Salinas California. They take people into these "public" Islands to hunt. The only problem is it is pretty pricey.

I was thinking if one of the guys on Jesse's thread was a helicopter pilot or someone knew of one we could get a hunt going.

Take care
Bill
