Man, I'm still bushed from last weekend..........SDHNTR and I made a little visit to see Frank and Kek of Mustang Guide service. I wanted to do a combo hunt for Turkey and Boar, Nate was looking at arrowing a Turkey and, if a big ol tusker presented itself, maybe a hog too.

Saturday morning we setup at a Ranch in the Carmel Valley for Turkey. Nate nailed one at first light (see story on that in the bowhunter forum.....) then we did the spot and stalk thing the rest of the morning to see if I could get one with a shotgun. I had a quick look (and shot) at one who was peeking over a ridgeline, but missed clean. Later we went to another ranch, but the same result....no turkey.

That afternoon we cruised the San Ardo ranch looking for Hogs. Late afternoon we saw some, but all of em were spooky, many of em bookin away at 500 yds....these guys were a lot more wary than I've ever seen em on the ranch. No dice.

Sunday morning I opt'd to hunt hog instead of turkey. We went to the canyon we'd seen them late Saturday and cruised it but nobody was home. Then we went to the next big canyon over and just after we hit the ridgeline, Nate spotted about 15 hogs, all nice ones 125-160 lbs class eaters, across the canyon, sidehilling at about 150-200 yards away. They'd seen us and were on the move to safer pastures, namely, the thick brush at the mouth of the canyon. They had a couple avenues of escape, the thick brush about 400 yards ahead or go up to the ridge and over. After a few minutes of playing cat and mouse, they looked committed to heading to the brush. Frank gassed the infamous "Dr. Death" mobile (well, the new one) and we went to the end of the canyon and then to the opposite side, above and a little in front of them to hopefully intercept em.

We all bailed out of the truck, and I found a nice little clearing between the oaks on the side of the canyon. Just then here they come, some blistering thru the clearing, some below it in the trees. One of them decides to stop. I pull up my trusty Win M70 30-06, get the crosshairs on the hog, hold steady and squeezed off a 165 Grain handloaded Nosler partition. PIG DOWN!! We hustle down there and Nate points out the white frothy looking "lung" material on the ground. Then we turn the hog over to look for the exit (or enterance) hole...Turns out that wasn't lung on the ground, it was brain. The bullet entered the right eye (see photo) and exited the brain cavity.

Little did SDHNTR know that when he called me "Deadeye" (in a previous post/another hunt) that I'd ever have the opportunity to literally live up to that name, lol.

Sometimes ya just plain get lucky........Here's my new lady. No trophy tusker or anything, but I've always been a meat hunter and I'll tell ya, hogs this size are just about perfect for that. Anyway, it was a great weekend up there, nice weather and great company.

The Deadeye hog......

You should have seen the other side of that hog's head. Well what was left of it anyway. That was a fun hunt and FD2 came through in the end. Strong work amigo.

Nice work there! Shooting them in the eye sure saves meat, but it can make it tricky to get a nice photo.

Thanks for all the nice words guys. I like the handle Deadeyediver handle too...but I'm gunna stay humble, lol......

I do like the idea about the head mount (too late, though), but I sure wouldn't put the patch on the braggin rights side, lol. Plus, years from now I'd be able to stretch the tale and say it was on the dead run at 600 yds, too, what the heck, make for a good eyebrow raiser at least.......
