Drew a tag for the Arcehry Antlerless Tule elk tag. The hunt started Thur,Oct 4 , After few close encounters in the morning and mid day. My luck changed as the elk tried to cross mission rd towards the airfield but vehicle traveling by push the elk back into the tree line except two which succefully made across and bedded in some oak tree near the airstrip.

Good for me as I had only 2 pair of eyes instead of 40. I looke onto the hills behind the bedded elk and found a marking point for a location where I would park and walk in towards the bedded elk. The make a long story short after making my way to where the elk was bedded and making a stalk up to 70 yards. I found them bedded under a tree. So I waited for them to get up and feed. For 2 hours I sat under and behind a bush 70 yards and low and behold a heard of elk come running across the airfield allowing the 2 bedded elk to see them and causing them to get up and maybe try and join the herd.

I was sitting down as the 2 Elk stood up and stared at the herd. They slowly started to walk as I tried to pick the biggest of the 2 making the 2nd elk my choice as she walked broadside 40yds. I drew my Mathews Switchback set @64 lbs, letting my 400gr beman Ics hunter tipped w/ Grim Reaper razor tip fly, But with the 40+ winds blowing in mine and the elk face the arrow hit just in front of the hind quarter. So I quickly load another arrow and by that time the elk did not know what hit her but instead of running she spun around giving me another shot right in the boiler room and she dropped 30 yds in front of me. She weighed in at 318 lbs and and probably aged about 7 yrs.

As far I know there were 10 tags 5 Military and 5 Civ and I was the only 1 to fill my tag w/ Archery gear for the weekend.

Nothing it was just wet with blood. I had back straps for dinner that nite with some Korean marinade and it was delicious.

Nice story, sounds like a fun hunt. A buddy of mine has a military tag for a Cow at Leggett in November. I am going to tag along, he has never killed a big game animal. It should be fun, I hope to be able to post some pics and a story after we get back.

Nice work, I hear that can be a very tough hunt. Pretty hard to beat cow elk on the dinner plate if you ask me, tasty critters for sure!
