Rannie can you give me some more information about these classes. I would sure like to learn, will the class include a free day of hunting? Here's an article I found in the LA Times.

Thanks Rannie.

A day loaded with pork
Janet Cromley

California's wild hogs have a long bloodline, extending back to the 18th century when explorers and settlers introduced domestic pigs and allowed them to run free.

Prolific breeders, the pigs established themselves throughout the state, with the heaviest concentrations extending from Mendocino to San Luis Obispo.

Though pigs thrive in many habitats, they seem to prefer oak woodlands and grasslands. Wild pigs are longer and thinner than their domestic ancestors, with smaller hindquarters and more powerful shoulders. A mature boar can weigh between 175 pounds and 350 pounds — and bagging one isn't easy. "You just don't walk out and find a pig," says Susan Herrgesell, a program coordinator for the Department of Fish and Game. "You must be downwind.

They'll smell you, hear you and see you." More than a hundred hunters have registered for a Wild Pig Hunting Clinic on Saturday sponsored by the Fish and Game department and the Pacific Coast Hunter Education Assn.

The class covers pig biology, how to stalk pigs and methods of hunting (from rifle and handgun to bow and arrow and muzzle loaders). "You have to go to the area before the pigs arrive," Herrgesell says.

"Then you have to watch when the pigs come in, early in the morning and at dusk. It's a lot of work and a lot of time." But, she says, it's worth it. "Wild pig is delicious," she says. "It doesn't have a gamey flavor." The class is held at Ft. Hunter Liggett in Monterey County from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $30, which includes pig recipes and a barbecue lunch. Call (530) 225-2319.

The California Department of Fish and Game (DFG), in partnership with Pacific Coast Hunter Education Association, will offer a Wild Pig Hunting Clinic at Fort Hunter Liggett in Monterey County on April 30.

The clinic is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and includes a barbecue lunch. Space is limited.

Topics covered include pig biology, hunting considerations and requirements. Additionally, instructors will teach different methods of take and different strategies to locate wild pigs. Finally, trainers will explain hunting techniques, locations to hunt, and the proper way to care for game. As a bonus, wild pig recipes will be shared.

Cost for the clinic is $30. However, the Pacific Coast Hunter Education Association will refund $20 of the registration cost to all association members and other certified hunter education instructors as a way of saying thanks for helping educate the next generation of California hunters.

Raffle tickets will be available for $5 each, or five for $20. All proceeds from the clinic will go to Pacific Coast Hunter Education Association, and DFG’s Advanced Hunter Education program.

To register, go to www.dfg.ca.gov/coned/huntclinics/ and fill out the registration form, or call (530) 225-2319. For more information about the clinic and other Advanced Hunter Education clinics, contact Susan Herrgesell at (530) 225-2319 or e-mail at sherrges@dfg.ca.gov.

That may be Jimmy Rizzo teaching the class. He had a turkey class there last month on the CA opener.

Hi Rookies & everyone ...

Yup, the guys got it right. The class is being provided by DFG and is being held in like 3 hours (at 9am) here at FHL. It cost $30 and is being held at the recreation center. The lady in charge's name is Susan and she's really nice. If you need her number for further information or dates for future classes, let me know and I'll email it to you :)

By the way, where are you guys at? TA's 1 thru 7 and 23 thru 30 are open this weekend!! :)

I already registered over 70 hunters. My husband is here helping me out at the check-in window since John quit a couple weeks ago.

Jesse- Hopefully I'll be able to give you some wild pig girth measurements this weekend!

Rannie

At the hotel in King City on the night before my Turkey Hunt, I met two guys that were scheduled for that very class. The seemed like good guys and were interested in learning "The Ropes".

Small world.

I'm not sure who taught the class, Rannie will have to confirm it. I did hear that the only pig killed by the 130+ hunters last weekend was a sow protecting her little ones and "apparently" charged the hunter????

I'd like to hear form anyone who attended the class. Was it helpful at all? Or just the same info that you can find in one of Bob Robb's books? And are there going to be any more of these clinics?

Hi everyone...

The class was taught by a representative of the Dept of Fish & Game. If you look in the DFG website ( http://www.dfg.ca.gov/coned/events.html ) you'll see FHL listed there in the month of April. Her name is Susan and she might have done it alone or with another person but I'll find out for sure.

LOL... Yes only 1 pig was brought out last weekend by a hunter named Rennie (not me... lol). He and his partner saw a group of them and they started to run off but apparently one (the mother) did a big U-turn right at them. It charged after Rennie's hunting partner and so Rennie had to aim real quick and get the charging sow in the face. :( Mind you, Rennie was doing archery in TA-30, so good job to him and his aim! He said his partner was really shaken up by it
<
I would be too!

Anyways, there were a lot of sightings but many hunters said they were just too far to shoot at. Some of the Armenian hunters were just happy that FHL was back open and stayed in the campgrounds to celebrate... lol!
