Hi All-
I did get thought this morning and talked to someone who is responsbile for the process. Lots of unknows at this time and they are working on the SOP to define it better. According to the front desk, it includes all weaponss. Bows, cross bows and even bayonets. Again she was going to checkj with her manager on a few of the questions I had and get back to me soon. I hope! LOL! The one other thing I asked about was the pre registration process? It did not make sense to me that they would have you regsiter the weapon without them even seeing it. I think they are going to rethink that process as well and have you register with the weapon so they you can show you own it. Just the messenger here and will update the thread if I get anything more. Stay tuned.

The regulation says:

"Registration form must be hand carried to the registration office during the hours of operation(Without Weapon).."

and

"...everyone who carries / transports ANY weapon onto Fort Hunter Liggett Ca will be required to register the weapon with the FHL Directorate of Emergency Services BEFORE entry onto the installation"

So here's my question..... If I cannot enter the base with my weapons prior to registration, and I must carry the form by hand to the registration office - how does that work, exactly? If I go there, I'm going to hunt.... so I'll have my rifle in the truck. But since I can't mail in the registration, and cannot enter the base to hand carry the form, I'm kind of stuck.

Or am I missing something?
.

+1 and what if you are going to hunt LPNF at the end of Del Venturi Road or on the other side of FHL on Nacimiento Ferguson? What happens if you get pulled over while passing through the installation with your gun that's not registered?

L2H- I forgot to post that question on my update above. They are going to call me back to let me how driving though Ligget is going to be affected. Great question and not sure they have thought about that either. More to come if they get back to me! LOL!

The smart thing to do here, is register the weapons at the game shack. It's outside the catonment area, so you wouldn't have to drive thru the security point with the firearms. Every year, I have to register my firearms at VAFB. I do it while on a hunting trip. Common sense says if the gate guard asks you, you tell them your on your way to register them.

No, it's not.

The OLD game shack is by the campground. The NEW game shack is inside cantonment, at the library.

Sure, I agree. Bu that's not what they're telling me in phone calls and emails. They are telling me to come up during the week without the weapon(s) to drop off the paperwork. So, if I use the common sense approach I have to do two things:

1) I need to take a Friday off in order to get there in time before the Security office closes (not open on weekends), and

2) I need to hope that the guard is on the same "common sense" page and lets me in.

If I'm taking the day off and driving 3 hours, I'd like some official assurance that they can process me. So far, I've failed to get that official assurance.

While looking for upcoming projects (I'm an estimator for a mechanical contractor) today, I discovered that there is a 64 Million Dollar construction job at FHL going out for bid. It's listed as a Readiness Center.

That tells me things are going to be much busier at the Fort for a long time. We may not see a lot of areas open again in the near future - if ever.

Holy crap. This is NOT good news for hunting the fort.

Yeah, I forgot about the roof falling in. Be interesting on what they say. Especially during the elk hunts.

Considering a military base as a public hunting area is as foolish as considering the white house as public housing. When I was in the Army we were lucky to have two weekends a month open to hunting or fishing. I have always been shocked at the amount of access at FHL. Like Spectre said, way before 9/11 we had to keep our weapons locked up in the armory and check them in and out. I was in during the first gulf war and it had already been sop for decades. It sounds like they are preparing the base to be utilized as a regional training base. We had that at Ft. Stewart in GA for reservist and that is what limited our access. Do not be surprised if they use Vandy as a model going forward.

Things have a way of working themselfs out sometimes.
I hope your right about common sense.

Maybe they got a lot of constructive "feedback".

I had been exchanging emails with FHL Security for the last couple of days. The last message I sent was yesterday.I didn't get a reply..... but perhaps it helped? :

" I live three hours away, so coming down during a
weekday is going to be tough. I'm guessing that most hunters come long
distances, so this new policy is going to be hard to comply with for most
folks.

Perhaps you might mention at the next staff meeting that the program needs a
little tweaking in order to help us comply? I have absolutely no problem
doing it, I'm just trying to figure out how I can. On the next trip I can
come down earlier on a Friday so that I arrive when your office is open, but
I'll have the gun with me then so technically I can't come onto base to
register it. It's a catch-22 situation. :)

Would the guards let me in the first time with the weapon, if I have the
registration paperwork in-hand?"
