What are your ages? All I know is the area out of Tabosse Creek. From 395 you can see a dinstinct bench a ways up. If you guys are in shape, try to get up there. If not, the lower fingers will all have deer. That area should be a 100% success rate, but some hunters hold out and some miss. It will be hard to not guess right. Congrats on drawing!

Scout your butts off and find a good buck and then try and keep tabs on him until the opener. If you go up a few days before the opener you will find alot of deer. Good Luck

Congrats 7Mallys! Do a mule deer forum search for G3 and/or goodale. You will find lots of useful info as well as lots of great pictures to get you excited. With two of you hunting I would take the entire two weeks off and hold off shooting the second deer till the last weekend or until you see a MONSTER. Just the thrill of glassing up nice bucks and passing on them and then glassing up nicer ones, is something you can't do that much in CA. Enjoy the hunt part and take lots of pictures. The photos and videos are trophies too. After the first 4 days you will not see many hunters left and have the place to yourself. If you get lucky and get weather, you may see bucks that all the first weekend killers never got to see.

Get up high off the roads to glass areas you can not see from roads, but there are a lot of far away spots that can be glassed from the truck as well. A good spotting scope is a must. Here is an example of a "trophy" that does not hang on my wall, but in my memories forever. I was within bow range of several nice deer but it would have basically been target practice and I would have had to go home. Instead I stayed and hunted for two weeks passing on beautiful bucks every day! I do not know how old your son is but I know I would rather spend the entire two weeks of the season "hunting" and shoot a decent deer than spend one weekend and shoot a better deer unless it was MUCH better.

You may have a chance to see a bruiser, and by all means take him when you do, but do not shoot the first nice 4x4 you see. You will have many opportunities for decent deer. Look at pictures from years past on the forum search and decide how big it has to be to end one of the most enjoyable Ca hunts you will ever go on. Have I said be patient and don't shoot too early and regret it like half the people who get this tag? I hope you get my drift! Good luck!

I did a search with g3 goodale help and got plenty of stuff to look at. Make sure to check all the pages. For some reason G3 is too short to search for even though that is the best thing in your case to search for. Prolly cause it is mentioned so much it is like searching for "is" and blows the search engines mind? Maybe someone smarter than I can figure out how to search for G3.

Google

That doesn't find many threads on JHO. The search engine here should except "G3 deer hunting" but it doesn't.

why put in for a tag if you know nothing about the area the tag allows you to hunt?

or

do you know some, but are hoping to learn a lot more?

I don't mean to sound rude, but for some reason this year I have seen WAY to many people coming on here looking for others to give up there hard earned information about hunting spots...that is BS in my book...but life goes on.

congrats on the tag and good luck to you guys!

So what if people put in for unfamilar areas! People come on here to learn and ask questions. You dont have to give up any of your precious spots! So keep your book to yourself!:rotflmao:

Hey 7, I responded a short time ago to a post about X10. The same thing holds true in the Goodale hunt area; with consideration to the difference in the time of year your hunting. The Goodale hunt as I'm sure you know, is a late season hunt. The deer migrate from west to east (check my profile to find my X-10 posting). The majority of deer will hold shy of the eastern slope until the HEAVY snows pushes them out and over, and down the eastern slope. Although deer will likely be dispersed throughout the zone, I would pack in and over the top to hunt. But give that you don't know the zone, if I were you, I'd concentrate on hunting the high elevation passes, preferably a remote one.

This zone is very difficult to draw, and as such, many hunters dream of drawing such a zone. You started with the right thing, applying, and then seeking information. So congratulations!

If you desire more information, your welcome to send me a pm, I'll be happy to help in any way I'm able.

If found 13 pages worth of posts about G3. The search function with Vbulletin software DOES NOT work with 2 letters. You have been provided with a way to use Google to search G3, it's up to you to use it if you want.

The google search is the ticket. Anyone that has actually drawn this hunt will probably be glad to help you out. This is a late season hunt that is not hunted by more than a handful of people every year. I would not give you my archery honey hole but I would love to help you in any way I can on this hunt. I will probably never draw this hunt again and if I do all the deer alive today will be dead by the time I do. Do not be afraid to ask all the questions you want. Some people will bag on you for not "knowing" your hunt before you apply. You drew the hunt that "most" hunters in CA want to draw and you should make the most of it and enjoy it to the max. Please feel free to ask all the questions you can think of, enjoy this hunt to the max, and post up any pics and recaps you can so we can all enjoy it with you. If anyone responds with anything negative blow it off as some one wishing they were you. This hunt goes up and down depending on weather and some other things but it is a stellar hunt. I never know my schedule but if I can get up there I would LOVE to spend a couple days helping you in any way I could. There are a a lot of guys on this site that can give you advice and if you google the way JTA6498 showed you there is a ton of info here already. PM me if you want to talk on the phone for a while or have any concerns. You have a hunt of a lifetime for CA and need to make the best of it. Congratulations.

Sodhunter: That picture you posted with the hunter walking away for the buck is classic! I can't tell you how many times I've actually seen it happen while glassing other hunters as they move through areas. It's an excellent example for always checking your backside. I was once watching this one buck, trying to put him to bed, so I could do my stalk, when he suddenly began crawling on all fours behind a large deadfall with his rack sideways and as low as he could get it. The reason soon came into view, as two hunters walked around a curve in the trail and into view. They went right passed the buck about 10 to 15 yards on the other side of the deadfall, and the buck slipped out the back.

I'm sure it's happened to many of us, including myself.

G3 is not exactly an area that people have had a chance to hunt and scout and learn about - it's a tag you put in the same way you buy a lottery ticket. If you won the lottery what's the first thing you'd do? You'd ask somebody that knows what they're talking about what you should do with the money. It's not like the guy was asking about Bzone hot spots. Sometimes people get this holier than thou attitude like nobody should put in for the single best tag in the state unless they are intimately familiar with the area. If I drew that tag I'd ask all kinds of questions on Jesses and it's not because I'm lazy - I probably scout as much or more than anybody on this site. I'd ask because there are others that have experience hunting that area that will never get that opportunity again in their lifetime.

Thank you mallarditis. For some reason there is a very small group who every year post rude replies to those who come here looking for help. You'd think after years of telling them to just let it go they would get the hint. :confused-yellow:

Same reason I left the other forum it was full of unhappy people that spent their time peeing on someone elses parade. This is what happens when your dealing with unsuccessfull jealous individuals. Let it go already and be happy for those who get a chance of a lifetime and maybe just maybe the favor will be returned to you sometime. I applied for G-37 this year and no nothing about the area does that disqualify me from playing. Grow up and move on.

I spoke with Bob (7malleys) on the phone the other day. He'll be using my place in Independence as his base for the hunt. Super nice guy, a regular hardworking Joe like the rest of us. He's just a bit luckier than us...

:smiley_green_with_e

Pray for snow so these guys can get the full G3 experience.
