Don't be so quick to canonize me...he's helping out with some of my expenses. But I am giving it up during two weeks of my prime bird hunting time. Hopefully it will look like this when he's up there:

why put in for a tag if you know nothing about the area the tag allows you to hunt?

or

do you know some, but are hoping to learn a lot more?

I don't mean to sound rude, but for some reason this year I have seen WAY to many people coming on here looking for others to give up there hard earned information about hunting spots...that is BS in my book...but life goes on.

congrats on the tag and good luck to you guys!

Wow. Fun police. In my book, hunting is more about the learning experience, figuring out what you're capable of, the thrill of the hunt and the chase, and being outside. Did you know everything there is to know when you were starting out? Did YOU ask any questions? This is a forum designed to share information, stories, or whatever you LIKE to help others, without puffing your chest out.

Forgive us for not being as polished a hunter as others oh wise Game Master.

This will be my first season hunting as well and I didn't really have a clue. Luckily I had a few guys PM me with some good information, their "old" hunting spots, etc.

We all gotta start somewhere!!! Share the wealth buddy and don't be so greedy :wavin hello:

Steve, you're awesome to help and am sure 7Malleys is helping as well. It all pays forward when we all learn and help one another out. Afterall if we don't band together the animal rights people will have their way with what we love to do.

Sodhunter: That picture you posted with the hunter walking away for the buck is classic! I can't tell you how many times I've actually seen it happen while glassing other hunters as they move through areas. It's an excellent example for always checking your backside. I was once watching this one buck, trying to put him to bed, so I could do my stalk, when he suddenly began crawling on all fours behind a large deadfall with his rack sideways and as low as he could get it. The reason soon came into view, as two hunters walked around a curve in the trail and into view. They went right passed the buck about 10 to 15 yards on the other side of the deadfall, and the buck slipped out the back.

I'm sure it's happened to many of us, including myself.

Bubblehide, look a little closer. That is someone filming a deer from 15 feet as it walks away. That is one of the deer that we passed on so we could keep hunting. Some were such park deer that I would have felt guilty shooting them! I had several bucks that saw me from 15 yds. and just walked away. This deer was walking around the second week of the season yet. The point is that you do not need a secret honey hole to get your deer on this hunt Just get some tips so you enjoy the hunt more. Tip #1. Enjoy "hunting" during this great hunt for as long as you can and don't shoot the first great buck you see unless it is a HOG! If you leave yourself a couple three days at the end, you will find deer. They are all over the place. Get some weather and you may see bigger deer than all the opening weekend hunters see. Even if you pass on one and can't find it back or someone else shoots it, if you get pics like this and bag one a little smaller, so what? Enjoy the HUNT! :toast-yellow:

Sodhunter: I guess I'll have to take a closer look; I guess that past experience lead me down that road. But the latter, now that's 100% down right good advice.

1st scouting mission done last weekend.
went to check out the roads and drainages and to my suprise seen around 60-70 deer in 1.5 days. 12 bucks, 5 looked good. the bucks we spied were about 1000 yards away (no spoting scope), could not count points but the frames were clearly visable through the binos and looked good. the closes good buck was about 600 yards, 4x4, heavy, good tine length, i would put him at 155-160 inches and thats being conservative. the group of bucks were about 3-4 miles north of lone pine creek (thats all im saying) the lone 4x4 was coming out of one of the drainages as weather at the top looked bad. we plan on scouting another 10-12 times before the opener. this is a large area for 35 hunters and i dont mind sharing my findings, but dont ask for details, i will give general locations just to help out the guys who cant get up here to scout. we saw a quail hunter with the right side shed of a huge buck near the lava flows.
more to come in a couple weeks.

You should not have any problems hunting that area. 12 times scouting before the hunt is a little much I would say. You will find that the bucks will move all over the place. We saw 1 buck 3 miles north of there we saw him the week before the opener. They are looking for does and will travel. Plus they will get moved during Thanksgiving when all us non-G3 tag holders come and drool and look at what we can't have. Just my FYI

You can never scout too much!!!!!!!!! If I had max points with intentions of hunting g3 I would of been making scouting trips years ago during the hunt, but thats just me. Most people draw these highly coveted tags and expect huge 4 points to be just standing around the roads feeling sorry for the poor hunter that waited 20 years to draw the tag. I read a story about a guy that drew the tag after many years of applying, He actually moved up there so he could scout 5 days a week months before the season. He was later rewarded with a 190+ nontypical. He didn't find the buck until a week before the season, but he knew the place like the back of his hand. That being said use your time now to study maps, learn the area and talk to as many locals as you can. Good luck!

After 13 years of applying i plan on spending any chance i get up there, plus it doesn't get old when you got a tag in your pocket.

IMHO, you could scout it every day, and it wouldn't be excessive.

I'm glad to read that you have the time to put into the hunt, it's hard to dedicate that kind of time, but I'm sure it'll pay off for you.

Best of luck!

No problem scouting lots if you have time, it is fun! But if you have to choose, spend a few days right before and hunt the whole two weeks instead of scouting if time off is an issue. If not, scout lots AND stay and scout the week before and hunt the two weeks of the season!

Our plan is to scout every weekend including Thanksgiving weekend, hope to find the drainage that holds a trophy buck and try to pattern him. i know they will be moving alot rounding up does, but hopefully see something that will help us refrain from shooting lesser bucks. The bucks we saw last week definatly came out of the mountains after the close of X9B. We feel deer are slowly moving down, and if a good storm hits holy crap, it will look like a hwy.
