This hunt was definitely not what I expected. After watching numerous videos of deer dancing all over the place I thought this would be a shoe in.
I showed up opening morning and it seemed like every hunter had 3 carloads of spotters and dozens of locals watching the hunters.
The road to the high country was closed due to an impassable ice sheet that wouldn’t melt even though the temps were in the 70’s
After 3 days of only seeing does and forkies I headed home with plans to hunt the last 4 days of the season.
When I came back temps were still in the mid 70’s but fewer hunters. However the winds were so strong hunting was impossible. Glassing the hills all I could see were does and forkies and very few.
I camped up high on Onion Valley Rd. and in the morning saw the first 3x3 of the season. Now this would have been a deer I would have passed on but after not seeing hardly anything and this being an easy retrieval (all downhill) and within handgun range I decided to put on a stalk and the rest is history

It only took 40 years to draw the tag, definitely not the hunt it once was but still a great time
