Georgetown KY man shot in hunting accident

Turkey season was only a few hours old Tuesday when Scott County had its first hunting accident as a man shot his 23-year-old son in the face and shoulder.
Mark Helgerson and his son Matthew were turkey hunting behind the Eagle Bend subdivision in Sadieville when Mark accidentally shot his son with a 12-gauge shotgun at approximately 7:20 a.m., Scott County Detective Jack Patrick said.
Matthew’s injuries were not life threatening, but he was transported to Georgetown Community Hospital for treatment, Patrick said.
“This was the first day of the season, and they were both using calls to call the turkeys in,” Patrick said. “The father had a visual on what he thought was a turkey, and when he fired he accidentally struck his son. The boy was struck on the left side of his face and on his left shoulder.”
The sheriff’s office does not plan to investigate the accident further, but Patrick had a word of advice for hunters.
“Make sure they’re aware of what their target is,” Patrick said. “Make sure it is a turkey and not a human in there.”
The Helgersons could not be reached for comment yesterday.
