OK after a couple Hunts it has become obvious to me that there is NOT a one pack Fits all.
So time to break it down and repack it, So first to go are all the deer stuff, scent, calls, game slides ect.

And repack the must haves

3 days Emergence food and water
First aide kit
Rain gear
Knifes and sharpeners, ?? Maybe not all ? Just what I would need to gut the piggy, Not deboning it in the field
OK sort out Knifes
Binoculars, and I am going to need BBB new ones, Very low light ones
Hiking sticks
Any other Day pack necessities ?

Pig stuff, Call and scent, and I bought the Kamaru Rifle Bearer, should work great with my day pack

Totally different type of Hunting, nothing farther than a hour hike. Quads to go get them and Haul them back to the Ranch. shower, kitchen amenities !

I guess the Biggest change would be the hunting times, very early and into the night, the low light factor !
And I must admit it would not hurt my Deer Hunting to Have Better optics, they just were not necessary.
so time to save up 1500 to 2000 dollars for a scope and binoculars, think maybe I could get really good at 1000 or less ? What did you buy, for how much and is it your wet dream of optics ?

OPAH- for rifle optics I love Vortex for the quality and price. I ended up putting a resovior in my day pack for the watr. worked great. is that what you have? 3 days of water seems like a lot of water? How much do you bring for 3 day? Gets really heavy! LOL! For knife you really only need the one knife for gutting. Do you have a laser to judge distance? I just started using one because I figured out I was wrong in guessing distance. Just a few suggestions.

For hogs I carry a gut hook, pocket knife, latex gloves, pen to fill out the tag and zip ties to attach it. I cant stand shouldering the rifle with a back pack on so I use a fanny pack.

After many years of buying optics and not being satisfied I now buy once a cry once. I bought a pair of Leica Geovid HD-R's last year to replace a 12 year old pair of Geovid's. I couldn't imagine hunting with out good binoculars

Yes I have a range finder that is a most have also, for water I like to carry 4 liters, I have water pockets that fit my 2 liter platypus water bags and my water filtration straw. Vortex seems to be the new Leopold ?
I will have to look into them, Revo has a 44MM he really likes, they should also have a 50MM, I really like the look of the 50mm on my Browning BOSS. This pig Hunting has pushed me to where I must upgrade now and I just don't want it to be like a Phone you buy the best and two weeks later it is obsolete.

Knife: replaceable-blade knife (Either Havalon or Outdoors Edge). Then I just switched over to a Leatherman Skeletool CX because it gives ya pliers and another knife and a screw driver for just 5oz. And has a pocket clip, so ya don't have to have it on your belt fighting with your packs hip-belt. The knife on that one is a combo blade. I've found the serrated part of a blade works a lil better at removing pokey branches when backing up to a tree or bush for your sit. Or just using the wire-cutter function of the pliers to snip 'em off with a lil bit of twist of the wrist.

3 days of water? That's a darn lot of weight. You'd do better to pre-stash some back up in wherever you're going ahead of time on a prior days journey. That's what I did. Just get a cheap Walmart camo throw blanket to wrap the water bottles in. (I'm assuming you cannot filter-it from a source out there.) It varies with temperature, but Typical adult male is supposed to be 1.5gal/day as a mid-line base amount of water. 1 gal is approx 4 liters.

RE: Optics for in the field. (Not talking about your weapon here) Ya really gotta think about how you're going to use it in the field... AND... what is the terrain like? Most of the time 8x's seem like plenty for Binos to me. I only start wanting 10x and above if the terrain is more like the open Desert Hills that aren't as thickly filled-in with vegetation, and you actually *can* see something far away. Most other places though, the 8x's are the ticket as far as I'm concerned. They are quicker to get on a target your eye want to check out. And you can hold them with just hands braced against your cheek-bones and eyebrow-bones MUCH more stable than you can with 10x's... especially when your blood is pumping from the hike-in. Also with the 10x's it's a little trickier to spot your landmark that you made note of before raising the Binos to face and then working your way over to your spot of interest.

If you're bringing a tripod along, and plan on setting it up for glassing... then yeah.. I'd recommend 10x Binos minimum. But go for HD glass. With a 10x... in mountainous terrain, you can spot things where that amount of distance... in that terrain... is gonna take you all damn day to get over there anyway. So there's not much need to go higher in magnification, because what good would it do ya to be able to see stuff farther away than you could actually travel within the confines of that day? Ya see what I'm saying?

I have 10x42mm Vortex DiamondBack's. But the weight always seemed to bug my shoulders/neck a lil bit by end of day. And the shakiness in view by hand really does a number on the tiredness of my eyes. So I went ahead and bought another set of 8x42 Crossfire II's. I really like the 8's for just about everything. But again, most of the places I go are thick chaparral. Only that one Desert place do I ever think to myself that these 8's could use some help.

BTW... the Bushnell Ultra Legend HD 10x42mm Monocular is worth considering too! It's glass is real darn good and it saves a lot of weight, and already is threaded for tripod mount on bottom of it. And it has a nice stiff metal belt-clip on it that will not let you down. Can be used and focused with one hand. Sometimes if I'm taking a lot of weight in the pack, I'll go for that Monocular if I really need to drop weight in the pack.

What is the reasoning for wanting that much food and water in a day pack? For my day pack my extra food is usually just a can of good sardines. How much water you take is going to vary a lot depending on the temp, how much your in the sun, if it's readily available out in the field, etc. I've been fine taking only a liter and then other times ran out when I took 6. The other thing I will say about food and water is that if you start to get dehydrated some, dry foods like those dumb energy bars become practically unpalatable to the point you'll be trying to force yourself to eat them because you know you need the calories and still not eat half of it. When your thirsty those things are about as edible as sawdust.

Be sure to get those ultra-light-weight zippered pouches! Those things are sweet for separating stuff inside your pack. I got one for food/snacks. One for meds. One for toothbrush & paste. One for medical emergency stuff like bandages and gauze wrap / QuikClot, Fire-Starter Rod. And one last one with a Sawyer Mini-Water-Filter in it. Rest is Water and clothing and essentials and shelter stuff.

U sure this is for a pig hunt or a south African safari hunt.....lol
Yeh the 3 days of food Doesn't make sense if u r only doing short close day hunt, u have the quads close so u only need a real basic pack set up on your hike and have the xtra stuff on the quads if u need it. A basic fanny pack set up would be sufficient with A camel back water bladder set up.
If u where going to be out in the field hunting all day for hrs and a few miles from everything and everyone then u want a back pack set up.
I have light weight hiking sticks but I only used them to scout Lake Sonoma for wild pigs before the season I could cover a lot of ground and hump big hills with no problem.
Now go kill a pig and ask questions later.. .lol

See if I can find pics of my day pack set up....tra

I deer Hunt alone quite often and you never know what could happen 5 miles into the woods. and By food I be talking protein and power bars some fruit and such, not the MREs.
Well I chose the Havalon bone Havalon Boner.jpg with the Gut hook and extra straight blades.
I also bought a new scope the Vortex Hog hunting scope 56 MM YES Luminated Yes super low light scope OOOOHH YES

  • The 3-12x56 Adjustable Objective Hog Hunter Crossfire II riflescope excels when hunting in the lowest light. The V-Brite reticle and over-sized objective allow hunters to take shots from heavy cover with the utmost confidence in tough light conditions .
  • The adjustable objective provides image focus and parallax removal to the shooter while anti-reflective, fully multi-coated lenses provide bright and clear views.
  • With long eye relief and an ultra-forgiving eye box, you'll be able to quickly get a sight picture and acquire your target. The fast focus eyepiece allows quick and easy reticle focusing.
  • Capped reset turrets are finger adjustable with MOA clicks that can be reset to zero after sighting in.
  • A single piece tube constructed from aircraft grade aluminum ensures strength and shockproof performance. O-ring sealed and nitrogen purged, the Crossfire II delivers waterproof and fogproof performance. 810ofSPZZEL._SL1500_.jpg

Revo, check into the Kifaru game bags man! Pillow cases are way heavy by comparison. The Kifaru game bags are only 1oz! And really really easy to work with in the field. And they have one of those push-button drawstring closures on the opening, and a strong nylon strap on the "bottom" so you can choose to hang them upside down and let the meat drip if you want. (Not that I ever have.) I bought two of them. I bring two and one Alaskan Game bag for the hide and skull. This year I'll probably skip the Alaskan Game Bag and just use the two. And they wash real easy too! No staining. And don't take-up hardly any space.

The first time I tried my buddy's Swarovski binoculars at the range I knew I had to have a pair. Found a good used pair on eBay not long after, expensive but worth every penny.

Guess there is no getting away from big and heavy with binoculars for low light situations.
Question I have a night owl inferred monocular night vision, now if it is not and in no way could be attached to my rifle is it legal for me to use and have in possession ?

My daypack usually has part of, and sometimes an entire hog, strapped to it. You don't need much in a daypack. What is essential is spending more time scouting.
