My wife and I are just about packed for the hunt next weekend. I have not been down to FHL in about a month. Last I saw 15 and 19 had quite a few Elk also saw a few on the river side of 25. Has anyone seen anything new. My wife will only be able to hunt the first 2 days(20-21) and if needed (25-28). My goal is to get hers first, then I will have the whole week to get mine. I hope this hunt goes smooth and we can both fill the freezer.

While my wife is down we will stay at the army lodge then after she leaves I will camp during the week. Is anyone else planning on camping there too?

Thanks,

Tom

Not going up there this year I think. But make sure to go to the mandatory briefing on friday. Im sure you got the letter about that in the packet you recieved. If you happen to get an elk do not leave without checking out at the shack. They get really pissed. Last year an elk hunter killed a n elk went to home to long beach and they made him come back the next morning to check it in. The warden was pissed.told him he was gonna confiscate it and write him a huge citation if he didnt come back.

Here's a few pics to get you warmed up! Took it 3 years ago in TA 16 during my Nov cow hunt. About 200 in that herd (Couldn't get the whole herd in one photo). I eventually shot one out of it, a few days later.

See you there Tom!!! Me and my buddy Andy will see you there. We both have a 444 tag, we are in the USCG in Morro bay and got a room at the lodge Friday-monday... We hope both of our elk are on the ground before then, but if not we will do some camping too. We haven't scouted yet but I feel like its not gonna be that hard... We are excited and can't wait to start hunting!

Wow I wish I saw herds out in the open like that. Real nice pics. I found more elk in the first 2 hours of the day then any other time. Also for me it was watching the treeline to see them popping the nose out for a peak.

I will have my camera with me and I will be taking lots of pics. I have leave for the whole week just in case we can't drop 2 on the weekend. Like I said before, when I was deer hunting about a month or 2 ago I saw lots of bulls and cows near 15 and 19. A couple of bulls were at least 6x6 a few spikes and some 4x4 and 5x5. Think I saw about 8 or 10 bulls. Really my first encounter with elk, they were walking all around me early one morning.

Looking forward to seeing some of yall Friday.

So nothing really happened today. My wife and I walked all over south side of 19, we saw no elk but could hear some bulls over in 20. Then in the afternoon we walked all over 13E. We did 12 miles of walking and saw just about every animal fhl has to offer, except for elk. Haha as I was writing this we just had a little earthquake here in Monterey. I will be back out tomorrow to try 13E again, I saw a lot of tracks out there that looked very fresh. To my knowledge there were no elk taken today. This may be due to the lack of general weapon zones open, only 25 was open. Going to give it my all tomorrow, bringing my mtn bike to cover more ground.

Let me know if anyone has any tips. I will be hunting alone tomorrow, my wife will be back on Tuesday to continue her hunt.

I killed my cow in 10 just west of Jolon Rd about middle of the TA, the elk there tend to go back and forth to 13E. Talk to everyone you see, knowing where they are now really helps. Talk to game shack and wardens if you can too. GEt up high and glass, move and glass some more, with all the meadows and openings they are pretty easy to find if you look long enough.

Good luck

So I am writing this post from ta 13E. Today was again slow, but I did see two bulls near the res. They were only spikes but it was good to actually see an elk in the ta I was hunting. Again the only gen weapon zone was 25. I covered just about every road in 13E on my mountain bike, and saw lots of deer. But I wonder if that earthquake last night has all the animals kinda spooked. It measured a 5.3 just east of king city, just a thought. I will not be able to hunt tomorrow I will be back on Tuesday.

Only 25 open for rifle? Too much training? Anybody know if any cows were taken?

Yeah there seems to be a lot of training. Also the new co does not really care about hunting like the last one. TA 24 opens today for gen weapons giving the rifle guys 2 TA to work. Also for mz more zones are open, 9,12b,13E,13W,19,20,22,29. Any thoughts on where to go? I talked to biologist last night and there is a pretty nice herd working 13b, they have to get water from 13e, so I was going to have my wife steak out the well in 13e, and I will bring my bow and try to drive them towards her.

Park near the reservoir in 24 and walk the road that seperates 20 and 24. after about 1/4 mile there should be some oak trees with a bunch of rocks undneath in a middle of a burnt area sit there theycross right through there. My friend had a shot at 70 yards and 35 yards and missed with his bow. :rotflmao:
