Anyone familiar with Gila elk? I'm planning a trip this year and was looking for tips on what to expect weather wise and habitat wise. I was in those parts in '70s,but not since.I have an outfitter/guide, but I want some outside perspective too.It's alot different than where I usually hunt,Sierras.And I've been to N NM a bunch. Just covering bases. Anyhelp?

The roads in the Gila Forest are very rocky. Popped 2 tires on my trip. Never did that before.
The weather was pretty warm on my hunt. Rain would come and go. The locals said they have not seen that much rain in years. Hopefully everything will still be green when you go.

I was in those parts a looong time ago and remember the rocks in NM and AZ. PJ's and some pines. It's warmer than where I've hunted in north NM I imagine. I've been getting some good info from the reference guys I've been talking with...They say it's mind blowing!! Any place there. And the outfitter has excellent setup and location no matter where the hunt is in Gila. Cool, can't wait. just 10 months til opener......
Cool, trying to find a decent natural history book around here is a joke. I'll talk to a couple friends at NMDG&F and see if I can find some. gogle it I guess. Won't know til I draw or get landowner tag. 16c and 15 out of Apache Creek. Or if I get real lucky the Valle Caldera. Putting in for it gives you 6 chances in NM
