Hey guys just want some info on public land suggestions .I heard good stuff lately about carrizo plains off of crocker springs .so I might hit that spot or coalinga. Has anyone heard or seen any action on public land and if theres anybody who would like to join. Im thinking of going to coalinga either curry mountain , stockdale mountain , laguna mountain , condon peak or kreyehagen peak . Just need to get out and walk . I live in bakersfield and any who wants to tag along let me know.im going this weekend either saturday or sunday.

Well, sorry to say nobody has taken u up on this. This weekend should be great hunting in those areas that u have described... A big storm is coming... My suggestion is go as far as u can on the trails... Google map those areas and look for some clearings and oak... This rain should have the pigs rooting out later... Those pigs have been hunted hard for yrs so look where the clear/oaks meet with the thicker brushes... Every time that I ve hunted those areas... I ve hiked anywhere from 8 to 15 miles trying to cover every inch of public land... Last thing... The mud there will stick to ur shoes so slipping I'd in avoidable... Hope ur in good shape... Goodluck to u.. Hope someone goes with u.. And report back

Damnit! I would gladly join you if I weren't broke. All the advice above is spot on for the areas you're looking at. I'm hoping to get out there in the next few weekends once I get paid. Just make sure you have the maps for the areas, they help.

Be careful of the land owner at Stockdale Mountain, he's aggressive when people are close to his property, I just called the Hollister Office and Tammy confirmed that-check out the old JHO threads. On the South side of Los Gatos / Colinga Road, the shortest access to pig sign in the Laguna Recreation Area is via Short Fence and once you reached the ridge top you will have a lot of room to play; i was there earlier this week. Have you been to any of those areas lately? if not hit-up the wolfman he's the best contact for detailed info.

This is the 2nd time I've heard somebody talk about pigs near crocker springs. I have worked near there for 10 years and have hunted quail and yotes in the area. I have never seen any sign that pigs could be there but these rumors have to start somewhe r? We have seen antelope, bobcats, badgers and deer over the years but never any pigs or any sign of pigs. I just don't think there's a decent food source in that area. I hope I'm wrong and they boom in population because that would mean I could hunt before and after work!

Hey smitty661, that's a nice pig in your profile picture; did you DIY and on public or private? I've an early model 30.06 and really enjoy the old Winchester.

Savagehunter, if the gorge is where the falls are then it's West of Laguna Campground. A 2mile uphill hike, not bad if a hunter is cut for the task. follow wolfman's advise to cut sign. good luck. Stay in touch with your luck and where ever you go, pm me on that.....happy trails.

Anyone heading out there tomorrow? I'm still debating whether to give the area a try or not yet. My neighbor is wanting to dairy pigeon shoot tomorrow but if that doesn't go through, I might just be up at Laguna mtn first thing in the morning. Hoping to get a light drizzle out there so the piggies can come out and say hi to my 30.06.

MGDeer- Thanks man! The pig in my profile picture was from Tejon, i was invited by a friend of my dad's who is a member. I have seen a few on public but i myself have not taken a public land pig. I have helped cut and pack them out but i didnt release the arrow or pull the trigger.

Savagehunter..... OK... If u are on Coalinga Rd. Going north... Once u pass Clear Creek Dr. Drive North about 2 miles and u will see Hernandez Reservoir on your right hand side... Drive about a mile and u will come to Laguna Mtn trail campground on your left.... Drive another mile and u will hit another campground on your right... Now keep on driving for another mile and on your left hand side will be Short Fence campground... That's where the Short Fence trail starts... Hike in as far as u can until u hit a dirt road.. This is where u gotta have your Maps otherwise u will be on Private land... There's a lot of thick areas and some opening areas... Make sure u are in great shape and make sure u know where u at or u could get lost...I don't advice u to stay until dark.. Bush whacking in the dark is no fun... There's only 1 trail in and out, if u missed it... U are gonna be hurting... This storm should be great pig hunting... But again... Its Public land hunting so pigs could be anywhere... Hope this is more clear.. Goodluck

Smitty, I know the drill 'bout cut-n-pack, I am very good at it...my only question is how much weight you want me to carry; size 19 neck, size 5 hat...ha!
