I was there for 4th season elk last year. You probably won't see much in the way of elk, and may be a little early for the deer rut. My advice is to get up high and glass the crap out of the country. Pray for snow. Hold out for at least a 28" mule deer. We saw a 30" + but only had a bull tag. We hunted Wilderness Ranch and got our elk on public land the second morning, going in.

I'll be southwest of you between in Unit 11. Have no idea if I will have a deer tag yet since the results have not been posted. I will however have an Elk tag and this will be my seventh year hunting the area. I am 6 for 6 on bulls and have always killed a deer on the years I have a tag. Some years we see hundreds of elk some years we see a couple. Three days of scouting before the season will tell me whether I am hunting for a legal bull or hunting for for a 6x6 or better.
A few in our group killed bulls, five total out of fifteen and two cows taken. Was a pretty decent year for elk. The deer however was a different story. The big bucks weren't there. I did shoot a buck but nothing special at all. I'll be interested in seeing what Colorado says about their deer results after this year. Of course, there was little to no bad weather prior to my arrival and we got nothing but a small dusting of snow while there.

Sorry you had a difficult time on the deer. There was six of us hunting south of you in Units 22 and 11. We manged to fill both of the deer tags, 3 bull tags and a cow tag. We left one unfilled bull tag due to poor marksmanship. We killed the two largest bucks we saw and the only decent bucks we saw. One 26" 4x4 and a 20" 4x4.
