I had not shot 300 yrds in over 22 years. The last time I was in the Army back in 87. We shot the M16 from 25 to 300 meters. I wanted to test my skills and see how my rifle shoots at that range. So I joined a gun club that has a 300 yrd range. Checked my zero at 200 yrds ,it was dead on.Got off the bench and shot prone, just with sling no rest.I kept my shots inside a 7 inch bull. Moved back to 300 yrds shot 3 off the bench to see what the drop was. It was 12 inches low. That put my aiming point were the reticle starts to get fat. Got off the bench and shot prone with a front sand bag rest.Kept all my shots in a 8 inch bull. Not bad, kills deer.
I was shooting a 30-06 REM 700 ADL with 22 inch barrel and 3X9X40 Leupold VX II scope.Ammo was 165 gr Fed fusion. Ballistics chart says drop at 300 yrds is 8.7 inches when sighted in at 200 yrds. But that is with a 24 inch barrel. Good thing I tested it , now I know forsure what it does. My brother had 11.5 inch drop shooting 150 gr Hornady BTSP hand loads. He was also shooting a rem 30-06 with 22 inch barrel.
