Me and my friend got to the ranch just before sundown on sat. night and spotted this boar heading to a water trough on our side of the fence (he was coming from the neigbor's field). We were over a mile away when we jumped out of the truck and worked our way up to meet him near the water. We stopped at about 250 yards and my friend Joe took his grandfathers winchester 1894, 32 win special and stalks up. The pig was so busy with his snout in the water that he did not notice joe until about 20 yards.....the hog starts to cruise away and BAM. The shot dropped him quick...he said he was aiming for the chest but solid brain shot

.
Anyway, the next morning I put two real nice stalks on a group and a lone boar with my bow....the first stalk was perfect. 40 yards, just as I drew back and anchored the group jammed. The second was ended when I released at about 55+ yards and missed......arrow landed about a foot below him. I will be practicing more...it will not happen again.
<

BTW, we did get a shot at a yote at about 400 yards with a 7mm.....hit the dirt a little low and he kicked in the afterburners.
<

Here is the pic of Joe's hog. Hope this pic post works....first (not last) one.

Good on you for getting close with the bow... couldn't get closer than 55 yards, huh?

Thanks,
Spec...no way, this ranch looks like Oklahoma, there is only one tree in about 5000 acres an it is as flat as a table. I was scrambling like madman and used the one and only ditch to head them off... I coud not conceal my movement noise when they got that close, so I had to give it it a try.
I had a great time and was happy to get that close.

Where was that photo of Joe taken? It looks like a Long Beach backyard, but it can't be.....can it?

. I'm not sure that anyone has a backyard that size in LB
It was Joes's yard in Norco....as soon as we got it off the truck a group of young girls ride up on horseback and freak out a liitle bit .......that was funny.

Tag,

I asked because I haven't seen many pics of an entire animal in someone’s yard, unless they live in the woods. I've always dressed out/quartered game in the field, but that's just the way I was taught to do it.

How long did it take to get it back to the house? Was it field dressed? (can't really tell from the pic) Has leaving the hide on ever resulted in spoilage, or any other problems?

Thanks,

Bow,
I have been taught the same thing when it comes to meat care. However, we gutted it and stuffed ice (sealed bags) in the carcas....the weather was very cool that night and we were back in Norco around 11am on sun morn. We skinned it in the garage and had severel people around to verify the meat was in good condition.
Do you think we were pushing it?

I'm certainly no expert, I'd like to hear what everyone else thinks about this.

My concern would be how quickly the meat would cool. I'm mainly referring to hogs because of the layer of fat between the meat and thick hide. This hog had a good 1.5" layer of fat, topped with a thick coat. Even with the ice he'd stay warm for a good while

I imagine if you iced him down real good, you weren't pushing your luck too hard. There's been more than one hog shot by archers that laid overnight until they could come back and track him the next morning ... and that meat was just fine.

Personally, I would've got the skin off ASAP, but quartering and such could wait a bit.

It is pork, though, so the more caution you can use, the better off you're likely to be.
