I have been so anticipating this hunt. The guys name is Brady from So Cal Quest Outfitters (I think thats name of the outfitt). I have never hunted with a guide before. Any Pointers for hunting with a guide would be appreciated. What do you guys normally tip your guide? They are going to field dress the pig and everything. All I have to do is take a game bag.

I haven't been on many guided hunts, but I herd that you should tip 20% of the cost of the hunt if it was OK and more if the guide went out of his way.

Went on a "cast & blast" with Sierra Drifters and we tipped 50% of the cost. The trip was cheap so I guess it depends.

I've been a guide for nine years now and I can only speak for myself. But if I got a tip that was 10%-20% of the cost of the hunt I would be very thankful. I think that that is very generous tip. One of the better tips I got was a inexpensive Fobus pistol holster from a client that noticed my holster was in need of replacement on a previous hunt. Nice quality items like knives, gift certificates are also a welcome change to cash.

IMO

On all my guided hunts, I usually tip 10% to 20%..It seems about right. I agree with Boaring, some of the guides I have been with are in need of new equipment (Binos, Slings, Gun Case, Whiskey (For after the hunt), Etc..Where does your guide hunt? Good luck on your trip

Since i know what its like to live off tips my last 2 pig hunts i tipped a little more than most probably would. I had a great time , scored hogs and my guide dressed my pigs.

Some of these guys work there tails off to find you pigs, and since most of what your paying is probably goin to the land owner or head honcho of the guide service, your guy might only get a small % of the fee.

And if the guide finds you pigs and for some reason you cant bring home the bacon (shoot straight or pull it together, ) you should still tip him for workin hard to find you pigs.

Unless of course he's a jerk, then ya spit in his pizza.... Uhhh , i mean dont tip him!

You're right about most of the fee going to the "outfitter" or the head guy, but the landowner doesn't get that much for a hog. The main thing is that the outfitter/head guide usually has the insurance to protect the landowner, who often just wants the hogs out of his crops or pastures without letting the gates open to fools who won't shut the gates or follow other common sense guidelines. This way, the guide is there to babysit the hunter and make sure they don't screw up. (This from the landowner's perspective.) From the hunter's point of view, the guide provides the advice, access, knowledge of habitat and quarry, as well as care of the meat or trophy.

The tip depends on how well I got along with the guide. I have tipped very well when I've gotten skunked, if the guide and I have had a great time together. Other times, I've taken a good animal and tipped minimally, because the guide was an arrogant jerk or a show off that humiliated me because he was 20 or 30 years younger and lived at that elevation. (This type has been the exception, as most guides do that kind of work because they enjoy people and they sincerely want you to succeed.)
