I learned a few things yesterday. One, that it's a good thing that pig tag books come with 5 tags, and it's never a bad idea at all to always carry more tags than you think you're gunna need. Last weekend I was lucky enough to get a fairly large sow and used up the first of the 5 tags. Then yesterday, I was fortunate (well, read on) enough to pull four pigs out of two different groups of pigs, ending up with 4 hogs for the morning, finishing up the tag book! Yeah, I know, they're small, but in the early morning light at a distance, when they're all the same size in an open field of cut barley, stalking for 200 then hurridly looking through the scope while they're running at 150-200 yds, I found that it can be pretty tough to judge weight, least it was for me. Glassing them initially from about 400 yards, I had it figured that the hogs average weight in at least one group was around 150 with the multicolored one (the largest) maybe 180-200. Way off. The largest (multicolored) was approx. 100 lbs (hanging on the post), the next two 77 lbs, and I don't even want to guess what the 4th (smallest) one weighed, but I'd be suprised if it was 50 lbs. I felt bad about taking one that small, and still do. But maybe that's good medicine, too.

I also learned that when you catch a group out in the open and shoot at them multiple times, they will change the direction they're running in multiple times. They went west, then North (to me), then east, then finally south and into the bush (guess they finally figured it out).

Final lesson was back to the number of tags you carry. I personally learned that maybe it's NOT such a good idea to carry more tags than the number of pigs you want to skin!! I don't care what ANYONE will say about this, I learned that it's not a whole bunch easier skinning a 100 or 75 lb. pig than it is a pig twice that size. Skinning pigs still is a chore no matter what their size. I think I'm gunna carry only two tags from here on out......

Oh yeah, one other lesson....never leave gutted critters on the ground while you're skinning another one. Hang em all or get them off the ground somehow.... Fireants like pork too and leave a NASTY little red welt on your hand. That was a rude introduction to em. And meat eating bees aren't much fun either when it starts heating up. Get that stuff done as early and as quick as possible......

Here's one pic of the foursome, I'll post another pic of the last (larger) two in another post.

P.S. If I don't respond to any posts, it'll be because I'm on vacation tomorrow, without the internet anywhere close. Now that I left myself wide open on that, wait a week to beat me up on the dinks, so I can respond back, OK? Thanks for lookin.....

I'm betting all these will taste better than that 150 pounder your planning to get next time.

Guided hunt?

Thanks Shaginator.....only kept 2 of the hogs (the ranch owner wanted some pork, he doesn't hunt, so I happily oblige that every hunt) so it won't be a BIG BBQ. Good news is that those dinks should be pretty tasty.

Evan III........yes it is private land, a ranch where only two other people I know are allowed to hunt on, due to adjacent properties with horses, etc. I'm extremely fortunate and blessed to have "fallen into" something like this, and I am beyond thankful for it. And no, I can't even get my dad a ticket to hunt it, and I totally understand and respect that (and ain't pushin it either). On that note, I also believe there are other ranchers who have pig problems in the general area of Paso Robles who have the same situation, and would probably welcome a hunter or two if approached with a great deal of sincerity, humbleness and, a 1M liability insurance policy in hand wouldn't be a bad idea either. But ya gotta take a weekend or two or three and go knock on those doors and be able to take no for an answer many times over.......

P.S. HEY, how come nobody noticed the wierd lookin (but extremely lightweight for packin) gambrel I made out of PVC pipe, shark hooks and stainless wire? First time I used it, worked like a charm. I posted the recipe for it somewhere in the homemade stuff forum here if anybody is interested in makin one for themselves. They work pretty well, and as far as capacity, the one I made for a friend held onto his 225 lb. boar (last week, pic posted on another thread here) real good, so I'm takin it to Colorado in Sept for my muzzleloader adventure.....hopin I get something big enuf to maybe bend the hooks......nah.....

Don't feel bad, put the small ones on the spit! Nice heart shot on the one. The last time we killed multiple hogs, the skinning was brutal. Being the guide, I skinned four hogs while my guests got a heat on(nonpaying guests) I did get some help, but it was tough. Good tip.... Tie each hind leg to tree limb with a seperate rope as opposed to a gambel. This prevents spinning and makes the job much easier. Also, skin out the tendon area before hoisting, much easier....Nice Job!

Nice free! I killed a littl one too this weekend, if it makes you feel any better. It sure is hard to judge them a distance when they are all about the same size. And MikeSoCo, I agree with you on skinning out the leg before hanging. Makes it much easier. I actually skin out all four legs, and most of the belly, on the ground before hoisting.

Dang, Freediver!

I have occasional day dreams of doing something like that, but if I did, it would probably be public land way back of beyond, and I'd have to carry all of the danged things five miles back to the truck!
<

I don't think you're gonna catch too much heat for the dinks. Those are good eating pigs, and this ain't necessarily like trophy hunting. There are a lot of guys out there who prefer NOT to shoot anything over 100 pounds or so, just because the quality of meat is supposed to be better. Besides, this is still population control...

Sounds like you had a ball, and you'll have plenty to eat for a while!

My arrows are all nice and clean, Mike. Now why would I go and mess 'em up?

Seriously, I'm looking forward to it! Dunno about a five pig day, though.

Fellas, appreciate the kind words, they help. I don't feel 1/2 as bad now as I did when I brought home them dinks last Saturday. And speck, you're 100% right, this is basically about population control for this rancher, so they all count towards that goal............

I Just rolled in from a short trip with the family to San Jose Del Cabo. I'll post up a short story about fishin (yesterday) on a Panga out of La Playita (those who know me will realize that's the epitome of wishful thinking) on the Saltwater forum tomorrow. The big thing going on down there right now is 80-100 lb. Yellowfin with an occassional wahoo thrown in. I'll post up a pic...

Freedivr2,
Congrats! I have not been around either, however; mine has been due to work> (there is that 4 letter word again) I figured you were on private property only because even small pigs "drag" hard. All the ones I have taken on public property have been far far away from any road. I could not even imagine hauling 4 hogs to the road from where I hunt them.
Good going!

Thanks fellas...this was a bunch of fun because I got to pick em off at a good distance (usually they're much closer, 50-75 yds) while they were on the run, and ended up dropping multiples, so I felt pretty good about my shooting at least, and it was a bunch of fun for a few seconds, there.....

Good work, thats a real nice pile-o-pork. I wouldn't worry about the smaller ones, like everyone said, pest control !! Being new to hog hunting, and how hopelessly hooked, I think I would take one that is 100lbs before the 200lb boar, given two of them side by side. I don't consider it the same as looking for a mature nice racked buck. I'd rather have 60 pounds of good meat than 160 lbs of sausage only from a tough old boar. But who knows that may change after a stalk on a big old boar

Congrats, nice work !!!!
