I know grizzly island refuge in CA has a heard of tule elk and that they have drawings for hunts i think once a year. Has anyone ever been on one of these hunts and does anyone know how to apply?

Yes, they do have tule Elk... A young girl took an 11x11 a few years back. The tags are the most coveted elk draw in the state. Go to the DFG website and they have all you seek. But don't hold your breath, as the odds of getting drawn are only a little better than winning the lottery... Good luck.

Hunted there back in 2001. Basically you can get the application in the back of the BIG GAME HUNTING/TRACKS magazine that DFG puts out every May. The deadline is usually the first week of June. The magazine will give you all the information and applications you need for putting in for Elk, Antelope and Sheep.

As mentioned, it is a VERY hard draw. I waited 16 years for this guy...yeah..it was worth it. But pissed off my father. He has been in the drawing long than me.

) older got drawn once for a cow and then, a coupl eyears later, for the bull tag. He got a nice one, of course.

Do they still have the protestors out in force?

Yes, I drew a cow the first or second year of the hunt and a bull a few years later (the bull fed my wife and I all through grad school). The bull was a 6x7 (8x7, if you count a cheater and a wedding band). Real nice, hot chocolate colored ivories!!

Apply for the special permit in June/July. A small fee, then pay the license fee if the letter comes (my wife says I turned completely white and looked like I was going to pass out when I opened the letter). Be patient, I figured the odds were 30:1 on the cow tag and 30,000:1 for the bull tag the years I drew.

Rick: By the way, before I left Calif., I offered to bless your tags before you sent them in. I did for Donnie and, look, he drew La Panza that year.

Like what everyone is saying it takes a long time to get drwan. I don't want to P@#$ people off but I drew the period 2 Bull Tag back in 2002. I have only been applying for 3 years for the bull tag and was 17 when I drew it. I took an 8x8 that was 45" wide. I'll try to post a better picture soon. This is the only picture of the entire hunt. My cousin erased every single picture we took out in the field. My dad drew a spike tag this year and took his spike on the last day of the season. The guy the drew the bull tag this year killed a nice 9x7 on the last day also.

Lone Pine hunt has some nice animals also but the horns are broken a lot. First time I ever applied I drew bull tag and got this 48" 7x7. As you can see he is broke on the left side though. Most had missing brow tines and some had whole side broke off. Tag may be easier to get than Grizzly though. This was in 93. I don't know how bad they are broke up now.

The Lone Pine bulls are deficient in a mineral (potassium???) that helps "fix" calcium in the antlers. This makes the antlers brittle. That's why so many are broken. Back in the '90s, DFG was going to start supplementing their diet with some mineral blocks. Don't know what happened.

Those are some nice Bulls. As soon as I draw my Del norte bull tag I am going to start putting in for the Grizzly Island tag. That way I could get a Roseivelt and a tule elk in california.

I live down the street from Grizzly Island. After the rains came down last weekend, its not an Island anymore. There are trees floating down the roads.
