I need a shot of the teeth and it's wear...Antlers can't tell you the age. But just throwing out a number 5.5-6.5

Can I guess? But that would be cheating.

That's why I threw this out there. I often have customers asking me "How old do you think he is" when they bring in their deer or elk.
While I was waiting for the results, I had been thinking he'd be 8 yrs old. I'll wait till the end of today to post the results.
Joe, that's not fair. But you could say what you would have guessed him to be before you knew the results.

Aging by teeth is difficult and very much an art. Wear depends on what they eat, how abrasive is it (silica content can very in the same type of plant from area to area). There are a lot of variables. I have seen biologist be off 2-5 years on known aged deer on captures (recaptures and age known from pulling a tooth). That is why the tooth system is in my opinion much more accurate. It is not perfect but it is good. I am pretty good at aging spikes but after that it gets tricky.

By the look of his bones, I'd say around 8....what do the teeth say?

How do you know? Upper[/b]
Because a F&G biologist removed a tooth and at their lab they slice it and count the growth rings under a microscope. It's like counting the rings in a tree. JHO member DFGELK ( Joe ) sent me the letter informing me of the process and the results.
