Gut piles and carcasses on private land

I may have a line on a couple pieces of private land; one is 3000 undeveloped acres and the other is a working lettuce farm. The former is apparently annoyed at her property manager for not yet dealing with the pigs she complained about a year ago.

Before closing the deal I wanted to find out what people generally do with gut piles and carcasses when they have access to private land. I'm pretty sure the owners won't want us leaving them laying about and stinking to high heaven, but I also don't relish the idea of digging a big hole every time we get a pig. The farm might be an easier option if they have equipment to dig a hole for us.

I'm pretty sure it's not legal to bag stuff up and put it in the dump, and tossing it out of the truck and into a ditch along some country road doesn't seem very neighbourly.

Is there another option, or should we just be grateful that we're getting pork for the low cost of a tag and a little digging?

I'll tell you what. You bring me with you and I will take care of the gut piles: ). If I were the land owner, I would want the piles buried.

i say, talk to the landowner beforehand. i have dumped the guts, skin, hooves, head into a big bucket and driven it to the furthest reaches of the property. all at the owner's request. once, a lady gave me the ok to put all the waste into her dumpster.

you would be surprise what eats the gross bits. most carcasses are pretty much gone when i check on them the next morning.

Leave the hog guts away from the ag field as much as possible. The coyotes will clean it up before it gets too stinky.

Unless it close to a residence dump them on the ground and come back in the evening for a coyote hunt.

I have seen a full grown cow that died disappear in 3 or 4 days

I believe burying is illegal if you are not something like 120 feet above the water table. If there are pigs there are most likely a large assortment of scavengers that will clean it all overnight. I live in a suburban neighborhood, but there is a creek behind my back yard. I leave all my parts right by the fence and they are gone in two nights. One time I came out to the back and there were about 6 raccoons making off with the remains of 4 rabbits. Turkeys are gone in one night. Pigs are a little bigger but I wouldn't put a little cannibalism past them either. And the yotes will definitely mop up too.

even the hide?

I know scavengers will clean up the guy pile pretty quickly, but will they eat the hide too? I didn't think anything would really eat that.

The hide is probably one of the only things that wont get snatched up quick, but they don't stink and the break down fairly quick once the rodents and bugs get to it. Then its just hair.

I've smelled some pretty stinky hides at Tejon when people dumped them too close to camp.

I would just put the hide in a strong garbage bag and throw it away in my trash. It's no worse than meat scraps or garbage from a restaurant. If it is several days until trash day, then I would keep it in the fridge or freezer. (I am also lucky to belong to a hunting/fishing club with a dumpster. Hefty trash bag and into the dumpster it goes.)

The other option is burying it. As others have said - it's a cheap price to pay for hunting hogs!

First way to avoid having a lot of waste is to eat most of the pig. Including organs, tongue, all the bones and the head for soup. ig-laughing:

After that, you will have very little to deal with. That I would double bag into trash compactor bags and take home. Freeze until trash day - voila. Alternatively, if you don't want it in your trash, I'd dump it on public land on your way home, far from the next road or hiking trail, literally carrying it half a mile away from people.

I would second what Rick said. I would leave the guts and such (The yotes will snatch that up QUICK). I would bring a BUNCH of heavy duty trash bags and bag up the hide, head and everything else and toss it in your own trash. That gut pile wont last more than 2 days...
