We hunted about 15 miles northwest of Challis. It appeared that the majority of the elk had already moved further north into the Wilderness area. We saw lots tracks headed that direction but very elk and only one spike in a week and ahalf of hunting. The deer season started a week before the elk season and it seemed like the deer hunters pushed the elk into the Wilderness area. In the area we hunted we only knew of a couple of bulls taken. The only nice one was taken by a hunter who spotted him about four days before the season started and he hiked in and camped up on the mountain for two days before the opening. He took a 340 class bull 30 minutes into opening day.

We are going be hunting northwest of Salmon on the Snake near YellowJacket Mt. this year. My partner is going to go up first, a week before the season starts.

Hopefully we will do better this year.
