19 Years in the making, I finally got a hog! Hallelujah!!
Chuck and I went up to VAFB thursday for a 3 day hog hunt and try to get rid of some spring fever. We've never been up there this early in the year and we were amazed at how green it was. The flowers were in bloom and the Mustard was 7 foot tall. It was like a different place.
I'd exchanged some e-mails with myfreindis410 and he was going to give us some recent sighting reports and maybe point a few places out on the map. I left a voicemail on his cell and he met us at the Gun Club and offered to take us out with him and his buddy Josh that night. No arm twisting required, thats for sure!
We rolled up on a coupla spots that were familiar to us, but 410 shared some local knowledge that turned "impossible hunt" to "easy". About the third overlook, we spotted 2 hogs across a STEEP valley at about 1000 yds and 410 asked if we wanted to work the hogs. After a little hesitation, he said, we can be there in 20 minutes without climbing down the cliff. Gotta love that local knowledge!
After about 20 minutes and mile and quarter dash down the valley floor we were able to get on top of the hogs with about 20 minutes of light left. There was a Huge hog and a smaller one. The big one had babies so we discussed it and I decided to go for the smaller one at 102 yards. I set up the shooting sticks and waited for the hog to give me a broadside shoulder. It seemed to take forever to get a clear shot. Then finally, the hog paused in a break in the grass and thats all it took. I pulled the trigger and it was all over. DRT and it dropped in the grass. Took us about 1 1/2 hours to get her out, turns out she was a dry sow that weighed 120 lbs. Perfect meat hog. The 19 year famine is over!
Chuck and I thank 410 and his buddy Josh, AWESOME!
