What Caliber of Handgun Would you/should you/do you carry while hunting hogs?

I used to carry a .357 w/castcores 195 gr. till I got charged and saw how little it affected the Hog for the first 5 rounds. Thanks GOD for #6. For now it's my 10mm.

Input???
Thanks

F350,

You'll find a lot of loyalty around here for anything from .44mag on up. Revolvers generally win out over semi-autos.

.357 will drop one, but according to the experts, it's at the bottom end.

Personally, if my .44mag Super Blackhawk won't drop 'em, I shouldn't have shot 'em in the first place.

I carry a 44 mag when I pack 1. A buddy of mine hit one in the head win it was charging him with a 44 and it did a 360 and kept coming the second round put it down at 7 steps away. When we skined it out the frist shot followed the skull around and lodged in the front shoulder.

I carry a handgun as a back up a rifle..usually a 44 mag or a Kimber 1911...seems like I go in cycles..right now I'm its the Kimber, 9 rounds of Black Talons in a flat easy to carry package.. but I'm sure I'll be back to the .44 eventually. One of these day I'll make up my mind

..but thats the fun of owning both of them.

Speckmisser,
That's probably exactly what my face looked like when I got charged

I NOW agree that it's at the bottom of the list. I'm hoping to get a .44 or maybe even a .454 but I'm told that between both of my Glocks, the 10mm will pretty much do the trick.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I have a G29 in 10mm and a G22 in .40SW but I'm told the .40 won't penetrate enough for a Hog.

I still say 10 shots of 10mm are better than 6 of .357 .

The only thing I need for my Pistol side of the safe now is a Glock in .45 acp.

God, I'm such a Gun whore!!!

Are you hunting with it or using it as a back-up? If I was hunting with a handgun I'd go .44 or better. As a back-up my 9mm CZ-75 hasn't let me down. Use good round like power ball or Mag-Tek ......don't shoot them with ball ammo.

One evening ,a few months ago, I parked my 4 wheeler at my deer blind and through out some feed. Shot two rabbits with my 9mm. I walked to the fense and set a couple of pig snares. Took about 30 minutes. When I walked back there was a sounder of about 25 pigs (a few large sows, small boars and a few piglets) eating around my 4-wheeler. They didn't see or smell me.I was smoking a cig from about 15 meters away! The only good shoot I had was on a 200lb + sow that had it's head next to my back tire. All I had was my 9m.pistol. I had visions of shooting my four wheller so I let her have one in the last rib. She ran off (buzzards found her before I did).Pigs ran everywhere, but I can still here them all around me.I thought .....that's strange.....They should be in the next county. Then from about 15 feet away this little 95lb. boar charges me. I fired twice but one was enough. He got eaten by rednecks.

It's all about placement, practice, and keeping your head. It's all right to be scared just make sure you send some lead down range where it can do some good.

I think age and size of the Hog play a huge factor.
The one that charged me took 2 in the head, then 2 through the shoulder and then while shatting myself...2 more in the head before it stopped and these were .357 cast cores.

It was like being charged by an adreneline pumped, crazed body builder on PCP.
I know it sounds dramatic but this is why I want a .44 or .454.
Yes, placement is everything...if the HOG knows it!!! But I don't want my buddies to ever see that look on my face again.

Was fun though.
