Your son will remember this for his whole life. My son's are all grown, and I never got to hunt with them, I envy you. My boys are coming down to visit in August and I hope to take them out hogdogging. Looking forward to the video my friend.

one thing I try to do is make it back to ca and hunt with my old man! It's an 11+ hour drive and I've managed to do it 2 of the last 3 years and I'm planning on another trip this fall! Hoping for x5a...but if not there is always a tag in b zone for us!

If anybody laughs at you for this, just remember that you have brought some amusement into their lives. How could that be a bad thing?

Your family totally rocks. Have a wonderful time.

I don't care where it is, if I get a hunting trip as a present I am going. Any day in the field beats a day in the office.

^ This, right here, 110%. Have fun, stay safe, when you bag your beast, take it to Bree's Meats in Garden Grove (Valley View and Chapman) on the way back. They did my Tejon boar real good, best bratwurst I've ever had, without a doubt.

that'll be in the ham section...

Well, we got to BHCR, I meet Jim who is just one hell of a nice guy. He says we got a bunch of new hogs from a farm that haven't been educated yet so if you see one you want to take home just feel free. I tell him I want my son to learn a little hunting and stalking before we go over to the grocery store and start shopping. I tell him we'll hike around a bit and see if we can't jump something a little more wild out of it's bed. He says what ever soots yuh and down we go.

In Pig canyon there are a bunch of new recruites. Some are laying under a shade tree about 200 yds from the watering hole but one big castrated boar takes off and immediately my son Elliot runs after him. I follow a little slower trying to get his attention with out spooking everything. He's like "shoot him dad!" I tell him that I want a little more sport and I want him to learn how to sneak up on one. He's not so sure about this idea when there is a bird in the hand just ahead of us... Ok dad. So we start tramping all over and the terrain is very steeeep. We go through all kinds of beds and runs etc. and then we hear some rustling up above us . Sure enough it is a group of three two russians and a speckled ferral that startled out of their beds but can't see us. I get a bead on one and I notice how much smaller he is than than the ones we passed on the way... hmmm.

Well we saw the other two go in another direction and start to follow them and after about an hour I come within shooting range of a speckeled guy and dang if he didn't look even smaller than the last one. At this point it is hot and my 9yr old starts to complain about stickers etc. and says, ok dad you stalked them and could have shot two of them but didn't , I say we go back to the barn yard, shoot the big pig-in-a-blanket snoring at the trough and bounce!

Ok, I guess I didn't realize how big these dudes were but the one we ended up slaugtering was easily over 300 lbs. It was a little sad that it wasn't a real wild boar chase for my son's first big game experience but it was really good for him to see and understand where that bacon "really" comes from, and we kind of said a little respectful prayer for the life we were taking... Besides that we have over 150 lbs of sausage, chops ,bacon hams etc. coming from the butcher shop and all in all we had a frikkin great time! That's $2.60 a lb. and a shopping exsperience my son will never forget.:hog chewing:

oh yaeh almost forgot the technical details. 350 gr. lead 54 cal hawkins and then I used the 50 cal inline as backup and we used it to put the big dude out of his missery. couldn't find the slug after digging around in his skull for 15 mins.

Nice shooting with that smoke pole.

Glad it turned out to be a rewarding outing for you. Think your son will want to go hunting with Dad again?

You made the right call shooting that castrated hog. That pork will taste MUCH better. Sounds like you and your son had a great time with some good lessons learned. Glad to see everything worked out. Those hills are pretty steep out there. They don't call it the badlands for nothing. Thanks for the pics and the story!:hog chewing:

That sounded like a great time. And with the Hawkins to boot! Mmmmm, that's gonna taste good and that hog looks like it might actually have bacon. I've yet to see a feral hog that had enough meat on the ribs to make bacon.

Good hunt and a lifetime bonding experience. Congrats.

By the way, see any goats or sheep that would look outstanding on the wall?

Man, that's a great writeup! And I love the way you drug him up the hills and down to teach him fair chase; that was AWESOME. In the end, he made the choice, so he's cool with it.

I'm with Ltdann; smoking job to use the Hawkins! I'm surprised you had to dispatch it after a clod of lead that size plowed through him. That's a fine looking hog hanging. And a huge one to boot. Gonna be some great smelling smoke curling around your place in a few weeks and months.

Great job!
