Good job! I too am surprised that you had to finish him off. It looks like you hit him where you are supposed to and when you shoot one with a bullet that looks like a THUMB, it will get their attention!

I agree that normally the boiler room is the correct bullet placement even though I was aiming for the heart and missed. Both lungs are the next best thing. And yet with a pig this big, that we were pretty close to, with a 9 yr old that was not raised on a farm. The sucking and blowing of the wound with the blood blowing out of it under all that air pressure, was a pretty sobering sight. I have seen many farm animals butchered and this pig would have won an award for the Dramatic show he put on. Add to that "it appeared" as though he was following my son and snapping his teeth. A few minutes is a long time to watch something die if your 9yrs old so I just wanted to turn the switch off before the experienced crossed the line. He was actually video taping it but that video tape will never see the light of day on this forum...LOL
No regrets mind you I just wanted him to have a good experience and not have it turn up in court as fodder for my ex wifes attourney...The question I asked him after we were driving home was, Now doesn't this beat Disneyland? His responce was: Hell Yeah! ... he's only allowed to swear when we are hunting or fishing!

Great story and I admire the way you went about the hunt and put it out there even though not everyone is a fan of BHCR. I was looking at that place to take my wife for her first "bowhunt" in preparation for deer season. I think it would be great practice from stalking to making the kill shot and preparing the hog to bring home. Was it hard to get into bow range? Thanks again for the info and pics!:hog chewing:

Thanks Mikey, in my opinion that would be the perfect use for your wifes needs. It is small but steep. It is also dry and getting dryer so the ones that are up in the canyons hiding can hear you coming if you are not careful. In the end you could cover all the deep draws in a day and so are almost assured of getting within bow range and at least one or two solid shots. have fun.

By the way, see any goats or sheep that would look outstanding on the wall?

The ones in the photo plus one more Dall were the only sheep I saw. I don't know enough about them to know if these are good, bad or ugly...

Kevin, Sorry I came to the party late. A great experience for your son and a nice write-up. You're not taking that cannon with us to LPNF are you?

I'll be taking my 7 yo daughter with me on visits to the SP ranch. I'm going to teach her how to glass for game and walk quietly through the woods. I expect to jump a predator out there eventually - that will be interesting for her. Still a few years before my son has the patience for this sort of stuff.

So, when's the BBQ?

Great hunt for your son to participate in. It sounds like you got as much out of the experience as you could for your boy. You'll be eating "high on the hog" (bet you never heard that one before, LOL) for a while with that one. Congrats!

holy crap!

Holy crap that is a lot of pork! I got everything back from the butcher today because the deep freeze that I got online finally showed up. It is almost full! Just thought I would share the follow-up and an awsome OSO Bucco recipe that I got from a buddy of mine that is a chef...I'll be curing and smoking the hams bacon and ham hocks in the next few weeks too...You were right about the bratwerst Clay. Those were the jucyest brats I have ever eaten and beleive me I have eaten some brats, I'm from wisconsin!

If you need some extra room in your freezer after you smoke the bacon and hams, I'd be glad to store some of it in my deep freeze. After all, what are friends for! That's the kind of guy I am; always lending a hand when needed........:toast-yellow:

looks good! I was just reminded of this thread while I cook the last of the backstraps from my piggy (still got plenty of brats and Italian) try it in the crock-pot, you won't be sorry. Season the heck out of it, sear it on all sides (high heat), coat it in BBQ sauce and more seasonings, put it in the crock (already heated up) over a bed of sliced onions and a 1/2 cup of water. 8 hours later=de-frickin'licious pulled pork/barbacoa/whatever you want to call it. I'm making BBQ sandwiches out of it tonight, but got enough for lunch everyday this week!! Life's good gents.

Great story and very funny the way you put things. Cant wait for my little one to be able to go. I like the way you did it with the stalking and such. Gave me something to think about when I take my son for his first time. You got me thinking.
