WARNING!!!!
Do not use Harper 4x4 rentals in Hawaii.
If they see you loading up a bow case or rifle case into their vehicle they put a bullseye on you.
I accept any damages I may do to a vehicle but this company will gouge you for scratches on the undercarriage and charge you for a new set of tires.
BIG island RIP-OFF !!!
When you turn in your truck the first thing they do is roll out huge mirrors on wheels and start marking down every little scratch to the undercarriage and they'll hand you a laundry list of "damages"
STAY AWAY from Harper car and truck rental in Hawaii.

Someone else, "Jeff" shared a similar horror story.

Don't go there !
Edit Review? By Breck D.
Upon returning your 4x4, Harper's will roll out huge mirrors on wheels and gouge you for the lightest of scratches on the "undercarriage" and then procceed to charge you for a new set of tires, even though the tires were chewed up and scary looking when you picked up the truck. Big scam !!!!

DON'T USE HARPER
By Jeff A.
The people who work at Harper's don't seem to be very capable. I have rented from them three times and have always had problems. The often lose reservations or don't provide the type of automobile that you ask for. They are especially inept when you attempt to reserve an item using their web-based rental service.

The first two times I rented from them, they charged my credit card an incorrect amount. The third time I rented from them they charged me for damage to the automobile that was there when I first rented the vehicle. The continuously charged my credit card for months after I rented from them. From talking to others, I get the impression that this is typicle behavior from them.

I would not in any circumstance recommend that you rent from Harpers.

Uhhh. I don't see anything, but I guess that's probably your point.

Sounds like anybody the rents from them should take lots and lots of their own digital pictures before they leave. I've never heard of anyone taking pictures of scratches on the under carriage though.

I had a bad car rental experience when I was in Hilo in December. I reserved a car with Avis before I left home so I could use it to get to Parker Ranch on the other side of the island for some upland hunting. When I called them from the ship the night before my hunt, they had no record of my reservation and there was not a single rental "car" available in Hilo. I didn't let that discourage me though. With a little quick thinking and ingenuity on my part, I still made my hunting trip.....

I drove there along the coast and it was a beautiful drive. They did tell me that if I broke down on Hwy. 200 (Saddle Road) through Mauna Kea State Park that I would have to pay for the wrecker. I wanted to see the lava fields, so I chanced it and had no problems.

By the way. That was the last pickup they had. If I had to I would have rented a box truck for the trip.

I'm thinking that Harper's would be a good candidate for a Dateline NBC investigation.
I bet that if they showed up dressed in camo and loaded hunting gear into a rented truck and then parked it for a week, upon returning the truck they'd get charged for "damages"

Beautiful pictures Bzzboyz! Parker Ranch has some of the best hunting on the Big Island. I hunt the ranch every chance I get. Can't wait for this years bird season, glad you made the trip!

As for Harper & NBC Dateline, not a bad idea at all.
