If I recall correctly, the Sharp Shinned has a squared off tail at rest and the Cooper's tail is rounded. QR's bird has the rounded tail.
I never knew there were so many different kinds of hawks, until my chickens started disappearing. Red Tails are most common by me, but have caught a Cooper's in the act before. I believe they are slightly larger than the Sharp Shinned.
I would love to get into falconry, but have not located anyone within reasonable distance of me to apprentice under. Might be a good project to get set up prior to retirement.
I was on Lake Sonoma on a boat going to a new spot via boat bowhunting wild pigs and I saw this hawk or falcon fly by and land. I zoomed in as much as I could hoping to catch a little detail of him. Sorry for the not as sharp of a picture I was hoping for. Pretty small bird. Pretty hard to hold still on a moving boat. Anyway, I know he is not a Harris hawk but it would cool if someone recognized him. :xmas-hat:
I am noty completely sure and I don't have my birdbook here, but with that face it looks to me like a Peregrin falcon. And I would say that is a quite good picture.
