I was hoping for some help on Cummings Ranch from any of you Wilderness Unlimted members.....I will be hunting there very soon and have never been to that ranch....Any word on areas to start and if you have seen or heard of any pigs taken from that Ranch????I hear there are a few ponds for fishing, any word on those???Thanks for your time...Eric

If you dont get any response, email Tree Doc. When we were pig huntin last year at a friends property I remember him saying thats one of the ranches hes hunted for pig through WU....Goodluck.

I've hunted it. When the pigs are in, it's good hunting. Usually, the pigs come in when it's somewhat cold and wet which means when the roads are all closed. You have to hike up the mountain quite a ways before you get to the good spots. Once in a while they will come down low, but most of the time they are up in the canyons. There is one canyon up and to the left and one straight back. I like the one straight back because once you get up there you have a lot better view of everything and there are many more places to go, but it could take 2-3 hours of hard walking to get back there, especially if the roads are all wet. I'd suggest going up there in the summer when nobody is up there, driving back and learning the property, then going back next year with that knowledge. As with all WU property, it helps to know the caretaker. I know they say it's first come, but when I was an active member, if you knew the caretaker, you could get on a ranch anytime you wanted no matter if it was full or not. I know some other members who would go up to Cummings and kill pigs whenever the caretaker would call them up and tell them the pigs were in whether the season was closed or not. The same with Los Gatos. That's one of the reasons I'm not active in WU anymore. By the way, I wasn't the one who reported either one, but one of the caretakers was fired when someone found out, the one at Los Gatos wasn't.

I might add that the owner could get sued too!
Please members, never hunt WU property without a proper reservation. The consequences are severe. A good relationship with the Caretaker is fine but he doesn't manage the property.
One more thing.
I think the Pig hunting should get better after the grasses die off. Then the "Triangle" will be more evident.
I'm all over it.

Sorry, a little off topic but:
If one of you guys go to Cummings Mt. for pig, could you do a report back on the quail
population? Maybe mark on a map where you found coveys now and good looking hunting areas for this fall? I have very limited time this spring to scout for quail, and would hate to make a pig reservation and potentially block one of you out just so I could go scouting. I got a sow at Hill ranch near the end of January and am still munching on the meat.
I have a friend who lives in Visalia who hunts Cummings Ranch that i could get some info from, but he works this time of year until fall on the pipeline in Alaska, so I can't get any insider info on the piggies for you. He has taken a couple of pigs off that ranch in the last 3 years, but I know he goes for 3-4 day trips at a time and is a good archery pig hunter.
With all the rain Kern county has had this year, I think the quail population should explode!. I would willing to meet up with some of you So Cal. members this fall on Cummings, Montgomery or Paiute or maybe one of the Colinga area properties for a WU group quail hunt. I have 2 excellent shorthairs, and I am jogging so I will be in shape this fall.

I didn't get one. My friend went up and got five a couple of years back, then the caretaker went to another ranch. I think he goes there now. The quail are all over. You can get them in the flat land. Stay away from the cabin. It's off limits. There are some quail up higher if you don't have any luck down low. The grey squirrel are better up high. There are a couple of places where the water runs down the canyon and across the road. That's on the road to the left. On the road to the right I've never seen squirrel, but have seen deer and mt. lion.
