I have a couple of friends going to the Jan POR and they'll be hunting the Desert section. Has anyone hunted there? Good? Bad? Indifferent? I told them I'd ask around for a few opinions.
Scott mentioned he'd talked to some guys about the desert side last year. In fact, we were sort of leaning toward making our ressies there. Might wanna touch base with him and see what he remembers.
We chose the south side instead last year, which turned out perfect. I put in for the south side again in March. You gonna join us?
On my last POR they closed the desert side due to no animals being around in that area. It was in the beginning of June, but the summer heat had not arrived yet. I'm sure they'll take care of you if the animals dissapear again.
I am thinking about going to the POR in March. My buddy and I will be coming from the North. What area should we choose? Access and animals are what is important to us.
Hi songdog,
My buddy and I hunted the December POR in the desert area - it's north of 138 from the cement plant east, and from the desert floor to the top of the ridge. The hunting was beautiful but the finding was terrible - we only saw one small boar (that never offered a good shot) in 2 1/2 days of hunting. We covered A LOT of ground but the few pigs that were there were nocturnal (we cleared ground at dusk and checked for tracks before first light - the pigs had been through during the night.)
Check the area to the west of the check-in station. You'll come to a draw w/old buildings - head up the canyon from there - it really looked good. The hosts mentioned that if any snow had fallen on the peaks there would have been more pigs in the area, maybe you'll hit it just right! Good luck!

p.s. The maps they have for sale are terrible - and the directions to the check-in site are very poor. They tell you to watch for esconsions (or something like that) on the dirt road but just look for the boot w/a bike reflector on it at each turn - there's quite a few turns, so take the map they give you! Also, go straight over the canal (don't stay on the final paved road for more than a couple of hundred yards) or you'll really get lost! The roads are washboard until you get to the check-in, then they get better. Have fun!
From what I've read in previous threads, the desert side does not have much to offer. The South and North sides are the way to go. I like the south side but one of these days I will try the north. Good luck to your friends.
