Posts have been pretty light for the last few weeks. Have the hogs been hiding?

I was out last weekend, didn't see any hogs but saw a decent amount of fresh sign on the banks of streams. The ground is hardening up so nothing fresh in meadows or under oaks. Am heading out again tomorrow and saturday with a buddy.

I am going to hit Fort Huntter Ligget on Memorial day and see what I can do with my brother. First Pig Hunt so I am excited and I can scout the deer action while I am there for hunting season. Been scouring the internet for tips. This site has been great, but I havent found any recent info past Jan 2011.

Shot one on 29 april. Posted under poison oak cliffs.

That's enough pork to last for awhile...

I've wacked a number of them but nothing to write home about. Usually don't post much of what I shoot. They are very healthy and good eating right now!

We can't kill pigs here because the U.S. Government closed our base to hunting due to the fact they killed that pig overseas.......

Go to www.VAFBgunclub.com and look at the 30th SW Hunting Instruction. That will give you an overview of who is authorized to hunt and the conditions under which you are allowed to hunt.

You can call me at the Vandenberg Rod and Gun Club at 805 606 4560, ask for Alan. Nobody else that works there will be able to answer your hunting questions. You can also call the Conservation LE desk at 805 606 6804, but be aware the phone is staffed by active duty non-hunters.

Vandenberg has about 100,000 acres, 65% of it huntable with specific weapons-restricted areas like archery only, shotgun/muzzleloader only etc. A 4 X 4 is a good idea, but NO offroad travel is authorized, as are NO ATV's. Animals must be checked in prior to skinning, you have to pay a fee to hunt and be physically given your authorization to hunt, etc. Be aware that there is a lot of pressure up here and the hogs, as a result, are mostly nocturnal. The first and last hour of the day is your hunting time, and good optics are absolutely essential. If you show up with a $49 pair of Booshnel binos you might have some trouble seeing what you need to see in the tall grass at a mile or more. My hunting partner and I try to discourage shooting sows because of the high pressure up here. We are beginning to see some positive results from this (informal) policy.

Good info. Seems that one hour prior/after is the prime time. I wonder though were all the pressure from hunters is comming from. Deer hunting here at Camp Pendleton while semi-popular most hunters are sucessful. he heard is healthy, declining though because of some big fires two years ago but doing well. Can anyone point me in a direction for more info on Fort Hunter Ligget?

I was looking over the vandenberg hunting policy and do you any idea or who I should call to find out if Coast Guard civilians, CG member, and or CG uniformed civilians are authorized to hunt there?

Went out on Friday and Saturday with a buddy - he had shots at two nice boars late each evening and missed both - ouch! The one on friday was out at last light, the one yesterday was at about 7:15. Didn't see any moving in the morning.

Buddy killed 2 within the last 2 weeks at the ranch I hunt. One of the boars was pushing close to 400lb with 3 inch cutters. Personally, I haven't been out at all.

The pressure's on THE HOG's is coming from being regularly hunted. The hunters ain't feelin' any pressure, we're having a blast!

Below for info on FHL.

Thanks I have scoured that site also. Hoping they open up hunting on the Fri. during the Memorial Day 96! Need to go out and hit a 100 yard range. Sited in and my first 2 copper rounds hit center on the 1" circle. I was happy as that was $7 in ammo.

Hogs all over the place out in the open from 7am to 3:30pm today. Wasn't hunting, just looking. It's a good time to get out if your getting a little weather like we are.
