i talked to my brother last night. time to get serious. for the past years, we have only put in for NM elk. the place feels like "home court" to us. well drawing NM is usually a let down when we get that UNSUCCESSFUL label. we are going to put in for more states. i have made some contacts in colorado, montana, and wyoming.

have you ever drawn multiple states? done deal right? can you turn them down at a certian point? the one year we drew NM, it bounced onto our credit cards, and was a done deal.

sorry if this is a total newb question.

One year, my hunting buddy and I put in for deer and antelope in Wyoming. Along with these, we applied for an X zone in California. We got drawn for all 3 tags. We planned these hunts so they could all be hunted without having to cancel because of dates overlapping. They were mostly successful hunts. In Wyoming we also got some more over the counter doe/fawn antelope tags. That was a very good year of hunting. I think we finished the season with 9 animals between us.

I say go for it IF you have a place to store all of the game meat and intend to eat it all. We are very serious about making sure that no meat goes to waste. That is our primary thought.

That can definitely happen and yes, you are stuck with the tags. Plan accordingly.

I put in for tags in 8-10 states every year. I have never been draw for multiple states mostly because I put in for the very best hunts in each state and those hunts have terrible odds at best. Now as my points build up, I have 8-12 points in some states, I'll have to plan things out a little more. Though as you get more and more points you can also plan on drawing some tags by checking draw odds and what were the minimum points required to draw that tag.

Now to answer your question about getting stuck with a tag. Some states like OR. and NM. don't require you to purcahse the tag until after you've drawn. There are other rules in certain states that allow you to turn your tag back in but you, I believe in most cases, will lose your points.

sancho if you are just starting out applying in other states check those states game and fish web sites and look for draw odds and min. points to draw. Some states have that info and some don't. If you want to open up your options for more hunting opportunities like the ad says, just do it!

thanks. it is websites like this that give us newbs a chance.

i appreciate the info. hitting multiple states would be...daunting. financially, and with respect to time.

If you apply in several states and you apply for the "best draw odds" tags, than you will end up with too much on your plate. However, if you apply only for the "best tags/worst draw odds" than it most likely won't be a problem and you'd be lucky to draw even one.
Good luck!

I live in California and a couple years ago I drew a Montana Combo tag, a Nevada Antelope tag and a Nevada Elk tag. I turned in the Montana tags and got the Fun Police to give me a pass on both hunts.
