I'll probably get some crap for this post, but yes you can hunt Axis Deer, Hogs & Goats in Hawaii (Lanai actually)

If you're looking for an inexpensive, down and dirty day of hunting during your vacation in Hawaii this is not it.

However, if you find yourself with an extra $1,000 or so, and can't stand the idea of another day of poolside Mai Tais, this could be for you.

Don't get me wrong it's a real, fair chase, hunt. Except your guide seems a lot like the concierge from the Ritz Carlton. (On the upside if you forget your gun they have a beautiful double express rifle you can borrow)

I know this is late but I figure I should give you all the rundown on Hawaii hunting in case someone wants to try.

The most important decision that you can make when making a hunting trip to Hawaii is "Which Island".
There are guide services on the Big Island, Maui, Lanai, perhaps molokai, and Ni'ihau. However, it really is not that hard of hunting here in Hawaii. Game is often plentiful on public land. I'll give you a list of what game mammals are on each island:

Big Island: Feral pigs, feral goats, feral cattle (until November 2006), feral sheep, mouflon sheep, and (mainly) feral-mouflon hybred sheep.

Maui: Feral Goats, Feral Pigs, Axis Deer, Some other exotics might be found on the "arrow one ranch" but my knowledge is limited in that area.

Lanai: Axis deer and Mouflon sheep

Molokai: Feral Pigs, feral Goats, and axis deer.

Oahu: Feral pigs and feral goats.

Kauai: Columbian Black-tailed deer (imported from eastern oregon), Feral Goats, and feral pigs.

Now out of all these islands, I highly recomend the private land guide services on Maui and the Big Island. But do-it yourself public land hunts also have high success rates in some places: For the adventurous bowhunter, Unit-G on Kauai has excellent goat and pig hunting but requires long hikes over a strenuous trail and overnight camping. In Unit-G, if you hike 6 miles in, you are almost guarenteed a goat and guarenteed to see lots of goats and pig sign. On the Big Island, the entire forest on the Eastern half of the island is loaded with pigs and a hunter has excellent chance of success. There is even an open season on Cattle in one public hunting area. I just shot two boars in one day on sunday and saw many cows. It's a very wet area so bring rain gear and some places are high altitude. Excellent bowhunting can also be found in some areas of the big island. Stay away from Oahu, it is way too overcrowded. I don't know enough about Lanai and Molokai to make any recomendations. Ni'ihau has all sorts of exotic game from around the world but you need to get flown in by helicopter and it's big money. I do not recoment public hunting on Maui; the major deer herd is also located on private land and many public lands are difficult to access because of private land (unless one is good at obtaining permission). Good pig hunting might be found in the Northeastern slopes of Mt. Haleakala.

Check up on gun laws and hunters safety requirements before coming. Licenses are cheap ($100 for non residents) and permit are usually free or very inexpensive. Many places do not even require permits. It's pretty relaxed here.

WRONG! I can hunt Lanai for a week and only spend around $900 for the entire trip including airfare. I have hunted Lanai several times and will hunt it again any time I can get a group of 3 other hunters to go with me and split the cost of the 4x4 rental.
I've hunted right next to that hotel for $50 and the permit is good for 365 days no limit either sex. Sorry Bowrange but you just didn't do your homework and you did an Unplanned hunt. Lanai is overrun with axis deer and there is no place on that island where there isn't deer. Nic gave right on advise.

I see that you are from Meadow Vista, I went to school there from the 3rd grade and up. I grew up in Weimar and still have good friends there on Volley rd. Give me a call and I'll tell you what I know. If you're a DIY hunter don't waste your money on a guide.

Glass Eye, How exactly do you go about setting up one of those private-land Lanai hunts? I get asked this a lot and don't know what advise to give. I'ld like to know for myself too because I go to Maui a lot and Lanai is an easy boat ride away. Thanks

Hey Glass Eye, I'd be willing to share the expenses with you, and would not mind taking Nics advice and hutning Hilo side for Hogs and Wild cows. Heck I just wanna hunt Kaui sounds good too.

Na Pali Coast will practically provide 100% chance for goats and probably like a 50% chance for hogs. Easy DIY hunt. Bring camping gear and archery equipment, hike 6 miles in and camp, hunt from your spike camp. It's almost impossible to get skunked down there.

Nic, I didn't see your post here until now. All of Lanai is owned by the Lanai Company, it was owned by Dole but they don't grow pineapples on the pineapple island anymore.
The northern half of the island has state controlled hunts, one deer limit for the year. The southern half is the private side and is all year long. Rifle hunts are/were, last time I checked, $275 a day with a 3 deer limit, only one can be a buck, and no limit on mouflon. You need to make reservations first.
The archery only ares are places where they don't want guns going off, near town, along the paved roads, golf cources, etc. The permit is $50 and is good for 365 days, no limit either sex, and includes mouflon, however mouflon are rare in the archery only areas. I did however almost got run-over by a small ram, don't know why he was running but he skidded to a halt just a few feet in front of me and then did a 180.
Nic, I plan on hunting the Big Island real soon, as soon as I can finish greasing some skeaky wheels here at work, maybe the first part of March. E-mail me and I'll give you the name and number of the guy who runs the hunts on Lanai.
ps. I've got some unfinished business on Lanai. The last time I bowhunted there, on the last evening, I found a waterhole (rare on that desert island) where I had been blowing stalks on a big buck.

Sounds good but check with your wife first, a lot of guys say "I'm for it" but when the wife hears he wants to go to Hawaii to hunt she says "no way, not without me, if I can't go you can't go" unless you have an awesome wife or are single.

Glass Eye - you are so dead on, but here's my sales pitch: "Two weeks in Hawaii; one with me, and one, where I am gone hunting"

The best of both worlds.

Let's see if it works

Let me guess you want to take a muzzle loader if its the 1st weekend.
http://www.state.hi.us/dlnr/dofaw/hunting/lanmammregs.html[/b]
The last one I took was with my muzzleloader and it was my first kill with it.
It's too late to hunt the muzzleloader season or any of the state-run hunts because the application deadline for those hunts were back in early december.
ps. Hunter orange is required for the muzzleloader hunts, I didn't wear it for the picture.

howzit, glasseye.. im from hawaii, (big island) and am interested in the hunting you talk about on the south side of lanai. i'll be going there in 3 weeks for mouflon (drew first week of rifle season) and would love if you could put me in contact with someone on lanai that can get me hunting deer too.. i hunt rifle and archery, as well as muzzle loader, so weapon choice for me is not limited. if you want, my email is pesty327@hotmail.com or you can get back to me here. i tried to message you, but wasnt able to (maybe cause im new here..) Bigisle, congrats on drawing the 1st week. Don't forget to post up pic's and story when you're done.
I'll send you names and numbers in a few minutes. Take your bow for the deer, it's a better deal.
