Glass Eye, How exactly do you go about setting up one of those private-land Lanai hunts? I get asked this a lot and don't know what advise to give. I'ld like to know for myself too because I go to Maui a lot and Lanai is an easy boat ride away. Thanks[/b]
Nic, I didn't see your post here until now. All of Lanai is owned by the Lanai Company, it was owned by Dole but they don't grow pineapples on the pineapple island anymore.
The northern half of the island has state controlled hunts, one deer limit for the year. The southern half is the private side and is all year long. Rifle hunts are/were, last time I checked, $275 a day with a 3 deer limit, only one can be a buck, and no limit on mouflon. You need to make reservations first.
The archery only ares are places where they don't want guns going off, near town, along the paved roads, golf cources, etc. The permit is $50 and is good for 365 days, no limit either sex, and includes mouflon, however mouflon are rare in the archery only areas. I did however almost got run-over by a small ram, don't know why he was running but he skidded to a halt just a few feet in front of me and then did a 180.
Nic, I plan on hunting the Big Island real soon, as soon as I can finish greasing some skeaky wheels here at work, maybe the first part of March. E-mail me and I'll give you the name and number of the guy who runs the hunts on Lanai.
ps. I've got some unfinished business on Lanai. The last time I bowhunted there, on the last evening, I found a waterhole (rare on that desert island) where I had been blowing stalks on a big buck.

I've never used a guide there, all DIY. The #'s I have are of game managers.

Well, the information Glasseye gave was right on, I did a private land rifle hunt this past weekend and it was great. Lanai is such a nice place, friendly people, and not too many tourists. Small, easy to find your way around, and plenty of deer. I took the first two does I saw and was all Pau by 1000 or so. Easy! The guide can help find some bigger bucks if that is hat you are after, but if you are just looking for a fun trip and some meat, you don't need a guide. If you bowhunt, then the private land bowhunt is by far the best deal, 50 bucks for as many days as you want. The rifle hunt is a little pricey at 275, but hey, it's a whole lot cheaper than flying to Texas to hunt them on sombody's private ranch... Just get some other people to go along with you, the cost of a 4X4 and the gas (4.70/gallon) can get a little steep!

OMG ! the gas on Lanai is the same price as here in El Centro.
Congrats on bagging your deer. I bet you'll be back, right ?

Oops ! I thought it read $3.70 but $4.70 Wow !

Oh, I can't wait to head back for the public hunt next year. Don't have a bow to take advantage of the cheap private land, but it sure is great over there. Might bring back my muzzleloader to give that a try, too. Hopefully not so many people around on that public hunt. Thanks for the guidance, ended up being a great time!

Hey Glass Eye,
Thanks for posting all the info on Lanai. I'd be interested in that private lands archery permit and spliting the rental car. I work for DLNR over on Oahu and would love to get to lanai to do a axis deer hunt.
