Heading out to Carizzo

Hey everyone, wish me luck. Should be a little rain tomorrow and I'm headed out to Carizzo. Gonna be hitting up the Caliente range...its my first time out there so hopefully ill head in the right direction. Say hi if you're out there, I'll be driving an older grey chevy s10 with the hard cover on the bed.

good luck you might want to try the state land behind the over look get a map its not hard to find it borders the private property you might have a better chance

Had a bunch of fun. No pigs, lots of deer tracks, coyote tracks, some cat tracks. Hunted the Caliente mountain area by the campsite just north of kcl. Put about 6 or 7 miles on my legs today...thats a guess though.

MY legs are aching like none other right now, those hills'll get ya. It snowed on me like 2" in 4 hours too, that didn't help any. Thank god for goretex boots that dont get wet until your pant legs and long underwear are soaked enough to spread down to your sock and into your shoe. They didn't keep the snow and water out the whole time, but did a pretty good job. The whole area is really beautiful though, rolling green hills (white today), nice forests up higher. Saw a ton of deer tracks in this one valley that looked pretty fresh. Trailed another small deer through the fresh snow before it got down low enough that there wasn't enough snow to follow it, I followed the tracks in the mud for a while but lost them. At this point I was just trying to find things to do since there was no hogs.

Had a blast shooting at jackrabbits, didn't hit any but went out by soda lake with the 10/22 and was jumpshooting jackrabbits. Saw like 10 in about an hour of walking. Most were really far away and I couldn't make a good shot on them (not to say I didn't try). Those things are really friggin fast though. They'll spot you from like 150 yards out and just take off until they're out of sight.

I have to ask you guys, where do you hunt when you're looking for pigs there? high up? or low down? I wasn't sure where to check so I did a big loop, went away from the truck low down in the grassy areas, came back high up on the ridges almost to the peak.

Also, what is the best way to get to the area of the Calientes that's in between KCL and the other campsite? I didn't see any roads leading to it except a fenced off ranch.

Cali, Crodog: We saw a bunch of sign, rootings, tracks but no hogs. There's a post with pictures on it somehwere on this board

gunner: is the area you're talking about on the other side of the caliente range? I saw a road going up there on my map and tried to find it but couldn't so I ended up driving out on the 166 all the way to the south end of carrizo and entering through there. My original plan was to hit the other side though...it looked like there was less roads, and I'm sure less human traffic.

Glad you had a good time.
There are only a handful of public roads. All the public roads on the Carrizo side, leading iup nto the Caliente Mountains run up from Soda Lake Rd. If you look around for past posts there is lots info on this and some links to the BLM maps of the Carrizo Plains. Use Usaphotomaps to get more detailed shots. There is access from hwy 166 at Rock Front, but it is very limited.
The pigs out there are where you find them, here one day, there the next. They travel very long distances every night to feed and water.
I have a friend who leases a ranch that butts up to the Carrizo, and the pigs move on and off of it to get to the water he has there. He says sometimes they won't show up for weeks, then they will be there every night.

Well, I hope you did alright, because I'm here on the coast and it rained really heavy last night and this morning. Anyway, I plan on scheduling the first weekend after April 15, which would be 4-22 and 4-23 to hunt Caliente for hogs. Plan on going out and hunting Saturday late afternoon evening and Sunday morning. Stop by the visitors center. There was a very nice older lady there who got the map out and showed just where to hunt.

ev the state land is right behind the look out i come in on 7 mile rd go south about 05 miles and go west on the first dirt road and follow it back it is colored blue on the map and is bordered by private land on 3 sides also if you take the selby camp rd up towards the camp when you get to the old house stay rt and follow the rd back it will take you back to paramont farms land you can see where the pigs cross thru the fence and go up in the thicket i have hunted there alot and always see fresh sign but i think the pig must be doing the travaling at night if you can have someone show you the way to 5 willow springs that is ussally a good spot to check as well but noone want to give the spot up just do your research the pig come and go you just have to catch them at the right time

biggist key to carrezo is start walking at 3:30 am and just about light stop walking "DO NOT CROSS PRIVET"then sit and wait i hike that far 2-3 miles to my spot and am running 96% sucess on public key is get out early and start glassing youll be suprised

Agree to getting up early. I'm going out to Carrizo soon and was thinking 3:30 am was about right. And glassing also. Find a good vantage point where you can glass a large area, and sit down and start glassing at first light. Good binoculars are important for this, big exit pupil with lots of light transmission.

I had myself shut up in the back of the truck under a toneau cover...and my cel phone (alarm) died during the night, so I didn't get out until 6:30, it was about 830 or 9 by the time I got to the 2nd BIG hill...
