"The weekend" is finally approaching. Me and 3 buddies are booked for JCA hunting ranch for this weekend and I do hope the rain god will not be too angry at us. Man-o-man, it has been way too long since my last hunt and I can not begin to tell you how excited I am. Just to get out there, away from work, etc. and enjoy it....also it sure would be nice to bring home a wee little piggy. I will let you all know how it turns out.

Cheers.

Good luck on your hunt. I know Jim personally and he is pretty straight up. I think they had some snow on the ground last weekend but the past couple of days the warm rain has probably washed it out.

I got it everywhere....and I do mean everywhere. Enough about that... Four of us went all 4 shot hogs and only 2 of the hogs were retreived. It was definately a fun time. I never hunted out of a stand before so it was definately a new experience. The first night I was in the stand and it was raining sideways it was so freaggin' windy and the tree stand I was in swaying away!! As pigs were passing by out at 20 yards, I had to let em go for fear that my arrow would not fly as true as I would have liked. ..although I guess I could have aimed about 20 feet ahead of them to compensate for the windage. I shot mine while sneaking in a canyon (obviously full of poison oak) the next morning. I swatted him in the right neck&shoulder regioin at about 8 yards, he spun around at an about face and slammed down the hill at full speed. Found the broken end of my arrow; no blood as I must have hit bone. And we found no blood at all on the trail after about an hour of searching.

The ranch is crawling with pigs and I think JCA is the perfect place to introduce a young bowhunter to the world of pig hunting, as you can sit with your youngan up in the stands and talk them through the shot. I plan on taking my 2 boys there as soon as they are old enough.

How big is the JCA ranch? Is it a high fence hunt? Couldn't find this info on their web site. 500 dollars is resonable, but i hate trophy fees for (2'') or longer boars when many outfitters don,t have them. thanks for any info.

thanks for the well wishes. I just got back from the doctor and had to get a cortizone shot in the left butt cheek. so now I am sitting on on the left butt cheek with one eye swollen up closed as I am typing this...geez..how pathetic. Good thing beer and V.O. was invented. anywho, the cost is $500 and it is archery only. I think it is about 500-600 acres (seems bigger). I was just after a meat hog so the trophy fee did not phase me too much.

If you want to take an 2nd pig it is an additional $300 bucks. I declined to do that as I did not want an$800 hunting trip. There are "exotics" there too. I would recommend the place. But, the best place for hunting period has to be Chopper's hands down.

Every thing is cool except that damn poison oak. I get it so bad that the last time I was laid up for over a week. Unfortunately almost all the ranches on that mountain ranch where JCA is is nothing but poison oak. Poison Oak is the great equalizer in my hunting here on the coast. If is see it I, I have to skirt around it and I know I am missing a lot of great hunting spots because of this.

If anyone knows of a good preventive out there, please post it up.

257:

I have bow hunted in San Diego for 12 years. I run into lots and lots of poison oak and never have a problem with it. I think the reason is that in San Diego, there is an incredible amount of biting flies and mosquitoes where I hunt, so right from the beginning I covered up completely. I have no exposed skin. I use a hood, wrap a bandana around my neck, wear thermals underneath a few layers of long sleeve camo, camo cotton gloves, the works. There literally is no exposed skin. When I get home, I wash my hunting clothes in baking soda and water, and I always take a shower the day I get home no matter how much work there is still or how tired I am (if you get the oil off of your skin before it penetrates into the pores, you don't get it, but some people have better tolerance than others so time before activation can vary). So what is my method? Cover up completely so it doesn't touch you, leave your clothes on all day until you are ready to jump into the shower, wash them after you are done. Cover your seats and take the covers off before sitting down after you are clean. Remember the 10 most common spreaders of anything on your body are your fingers, keep those gloves on.

For gosh sakes be careful unzipping when you have to pee and touch NOTHING. Be even more cautious if you have to go #2!

I have hunted a ridiculous amount of hours around the stuff and I don't get it (knocking on my desk right now). I don't think I am immune, but I do think I minimize how much actually contacts my skin.

Will you sweat with all these clothes on and will it spook game? You bet, if you don't slow way down when walking around with all these clothes on. I am a spot and stalk hunter, I always move slow, if I am getting hot I take off a layer. I hope this helps, that stuff sucks.
