Help: 30-06 Bullet weight for Hogs???

Yes the Weatherby is moving up my list, as I have admired that brand since the early 70s but never thought it affordable until I came across Cabela's for $350. The Marlin XL7 has been a recent come from behind, as I never even considered a bolt action from Marlin until recent reading seems to find favorable mention of it in a lot of places.

Going through a few hundred rounds a month at the Chabot Gun Club with my .22 is teaching me lot about what to look for in the rifle's action & scope (besides humbling me in off-hand shooting).
It seems Non-Lead, factory loads, will be my main ammo.
I'll keep an eye open for anything you care to share about what you find out from your range time with the various brands & loads.
Each rifle & situation is different, but I hope to learn as much as I can without having to reinvent the wheel.

Yes indeed, I'm glad that most pigs aren't taken with the 275 yard shot across a valley of the silhouetted majestic beast….
maybe when I'm a better shot.

I have had very good luck with Federal premium TSX ammo out of three different rifles. !40 gr for two 7mm08 rifles and 165 gr for the 30-06 . Tack drivers out of all three rifles. And never had a problem recovering any critters.

I can only repeat what others have said above....use the type/weight of bullet that shots best in your rifle and place the bullet where it will do the most damage to the vitals. I use handloaded 150 grain Barnes Triple Shock bullets in my .30/06 and my .308. One shot kills every time. Practice hitting a 6" circle at 100 yards from standing, sitting, kneeling and prone positions. If you use a bipod/tripod, practice with it as well. Poor marksmanship will screw up any hunt no matter which bullet you choose.

Now try this - with the rifle on the bench, jog in place for three minutes, pick up the rifle, chamber a round and hit the 6" target from a standing position....yikes!!! That humbles me every time! (but it's still fun!!!!)

I can't wait to try this. Wish I had seen it before I went on my first hunt back in May!

100gr broadhead...two or three blade. Up close & personal is 1000 times for fun!
