THIS IS A TRUE STORY AND HAPPENED TO ME JUST LAST TUESDAY...I posted this on another forum but though I would see what ya'll would do in this case.

A buddy and I took my boat out to do a little fishing last night at a local lake. We also hunt this particular area and have actually taken the boat right back into the cove we were fishing in and let out before. We got there and had caught a few fish and were just enjoying a peaceful evening on the water. About that time I hear a few barks, then what sounded like a bay and everything went quiet. We didn't think much of it as we knew there were houses in the area all of which have dogs. About an hour later we hear what appears to be another bay but this time it's on the opposite side of the lake and further than anyone could walk without a boat. We listened for a while then I heard some grunting. I looked at my buddy and said "damn they got a hog caught out in the lake." Knowing that no one could have made it in there without a boat I decided to investigate. We reeled in the lines, fired up the boat and headed that way. As we got close I saw a red blinking light (tracking collars) and we could hear the catch. The dogs were 150+ yards out in the lake swimming in circles, bobbing up and down trying to catch the hog. I noticed several times the dogs were going completely under and decided we should intervien. We grabbed the hog and pulled it into the boat, then grabbed the three dogs. At that point we didn't know who's they were but we knew they would be tracking them. I killed the motor and gave a few yips to see if anyone would answer. After we trolled around a bit and figured out where the guy probably put in to hunt the bottom we found him. It turned out to be a guy I've hunted with and actually showed him the spot, which is another discussion all together because it happens to be public land....but....

Anyway we got the dogs back to him and gave him his hog still alive.

What would ya'll have done in this situtation?

**not sure how to post a picture from a shutterfly account but I got um.

Now that is a picture the world needs to see - you and your buddy in a fishing boat, along with that pig and the hog dogs.

THAT is so $%#@*&! country.

Sounds like he is lucky you guys were there, and willing to reel up and save his dogs and bacon.

I would of done the same thing, I don't think I would show that guy any more honey holes unless he is a good buddy or a youngster startin out. you did say it was public land so I guess you can only get so upset.
public or not I think a man should respect another mans secret spot.
If it was someone I didn't know I would still do the same . there are plenty of hogs and plenty of ground for every one. or you can do this
<
and tell find your own dam spot.

If That Were To Happen In California-

Some would take the collor off of the dogs and put them on the pigs for the owner to chase.
<
Then take the dogs to a home of some sort for recovering addicts where they can be medicated and placed in an old folks home as a petting dog.
<
(It has been done here in CA before

It would be hard for me to imagine anyone taking issue with what you did. Me, I would be mighty thankful to you for getting my dogs out of a bad situation.

If I was to hunt a secret spot that you showed me, I would not expect to be treated as well as you treated my dogs. That just ain't right, no matter how you look at it. Public or not, if I was shown the spot by someone else, I would honor that person's "claim" to it and not hunt it unless I was with them or given their A-OK to do so.

BLASTMASTER....did you not believe me or are you just messing with me? LOL!

Sorry we didn't have the camera in the boat so we didn't get any pictures of the catch but once we got back to the ramp and pulled the boat out we got some pictures.

I'm on the right and my buddy on the left.

Oh I believe you, all right. I just can't imagine what it would be like in a boat with a live pig and the 2 dogs that were chasing it! The best I can come up with is cartoonesque! ( pig runnin' circles around the boat, dogs hot on the tail yappin' like crazy)
<
Dogs, sure, but I don't think I'm brave enough to pull a live pig-on-the-run into my boat. Best I can think of is to latch a rope to the pig, and tow him to shore!

LOL! I got ya...the hog was swimming as well as the dogs so it wasn't like the hog could actually get at us. We just drove the boat right next to it and my buddy grabbed the ear, I reached down grabbed the tail and a hind leg and we hoisted it into the boat. Brad held the hog while I got the dogs. They were all exausted so they just took a seat up on the bow of the boat. Once we found the guy that was hunting he gave us his hobbles and we decided it would be eaiser if he walked back to his truck and met us at the boat ramp with the hog and his dogs. Here's another pic, you can see the three dogs up on the bow.

Unfortunately, if it was in CA I wouldn't be able to do what you did. First I would get cited for catching a live animal, illegal in CA. Secondly, I would get cited for hunting after dark. CA sucks!

Texasokie... Pretty neat pictures.. The same sort of thing happened to my cousin a couple of years ago here in Texas. They were running their dogs WAY back in this holler when they heard them on a pig.. By the time they got there the dogs and the pig, which weighed well over 300lbs., had rolled off a cliffside and into a creek down below. They scrambled down the side of the hill and finally got to the action. They were in the creek about neck deep. There were 3 dogs, the hog and a couple of guys all trying to get the pig out. All you could see was the pig going under the water and then it head pop up with all the dogs latched on.. It was quite a rodeo before they finally got the pig out of the water. Biggest pig they have every caught. Good news is that they got this entire event on video, which is hillarious to watch.. Bad news is that they lost a really good dog in the process....

I hunt in both Oklahoma and North Texas...actually all over Texas but the two above were both from North Texas.

I've had some exciting hunts in the past two or three years, several in the fashion you described above but we catch our fair share out in the open as well.

I could swear I've seen that last pic. before either here or elsewhere. That's a great story. I wished things like that happend around here. It's obvious that you all have experience grabbing a hog. I know I wouldn't dare unless I watched someone like you or your bro and could learn before putting my hands down with cutters like that. Cudos from Cali..
