Chap--you're still gonna have a blast bro. It seems you are doing everything right from the scouting, the research and everything else. It will pay off for you. Can't wait to read about your success, and don't forget we like pictures around here!

Good luck!

Kurt, As I predicted, all the archery guys have filled out and gone and not one of them took a bull from the west side in the Whitney zone. So unless you have some post traumatic stress disorder, from all your worrying, all is good for your hunt.

It is still a ways away, so conditions are going to change....antlers are going to break, but there are still some totally intact, so you may yet find a clean one.

Animals will be moving in and out of the different units as rut conditions change.

I see NO reason that will prevent you freom having a quality hunt.

Chap- you're screwed! I'll take the the tag and scouting report off your hands for $50. Scott mentioned you had drawn, I was wondering when you were going to come out of the closet. Congrats!

Howdy BC1, All is still good in Elk land.

Like Nickman stated there were some great bull that fell to the archers I saw the pics of him and Jerry, and they get me pumped up, but lucky for me none in my zone. Like I said before there were really just the 2 great bulls in that zone and looks like they MAY be there when I get to hunt. The big boy is said to have broke off some points but could score 290. That is big. Hope he still is in the area, they hunted him hard and then he vanished or was 2 miles in the open. The few good bulls in my zone went nocturnal or just flat out ran off from the reports I got. Many of the bulls are broken up but still should be a great hunt.
Since this is such a "sucky" tag I guess I will hold onto it Bc1 I don't want you to have to suffer the long hours of scouting and heat and have to pay me $50 bucks I will do everyone on here a service and use it so you guys don't have to:mooning:. Now you all know that I am just paying right. Some people on here just can't take a joke but it is true that this tag is a crappy tag to draw:lol bashing sign:. Do these little animated guys give you an insight to my sarcasm? Later Kurt

Thought I would chime in now. Let me tell you, this was a fantastic hunt all the way around. From the amount of animals, the quality of bulls, the beautiful scenery and companionship that I would not trade for the world. Getting a bull for me was secondary to THE HUNTING. All I really wanted going into this hunt was a great time and a representative animal. I got that and more. This bull was only the second animal that I have taken with my bow and I still consider ANY animal taken with a bow to be a trophy. Now that I have gotten my Tule, Rosie is next on the list!
We had a great bull blow by us on opening morning at 85 yards (wind was wrong), but called a raghorn in to 15 yards. COOL. I passed on a 5x7 on opening afternoon that I would have shot on day 4 or more, but he was just not an "opening morning" bull. I was on the ohter side of the bush when Orlando shot at the big 6x6 noted above. 5 more seconds and I would have been shooting. Oh well, that is part of hunting with a partner. You are both trying to get em. I missed a shot just over the back of a great bull (shown above and same bull Orlando had shot at) after a 5 hour stalk in the sun. BTW I was out of water for the last two hours of it! 100 degree temps and a lot of exertion will really sap you. I missed a shot either over the back or under the stomach on another bull we stalked for 6 hours and about 2 1/2 miles total, just could not get him in my slam dunk range, but awesome anyway. We put on stalk after stalk and got pretty close, but for one reason or another we got boogered. That is hunting. One afternoon we spotted a bull in a draw about 1 1/2 miles away and put on a perfect stalk to 15 yards only to find out that we stalked a bush! Funny sheist. Had I passed on the bull I ended up taking, I am sure I would have taken a higher scoring animal, but I honestly have NO regrets. My pre-hunt stalk to 35 yards of 12 bulls in the Bishop zone was worth the price of admission and I did not even have my bow in hand yet! I will put a story together for Relentless 365 if they will have it giving all the details of how things played out. It will be a "Back to Back" story outlining my Doyle M3 deer hunt last year and my Owens Valley Archery Bull hunt this year both tags drawn with maximum points on zones I have put in for over most of the last 12 years. Hopefully we will see it in an upcoming issue. Who knows, I still have max points for Antelope and Sheep so I will keep my fingers crossed for next year.
Now, to the important stuff.
Jerry did a great job for me. He knew where the animals were and helped me stalk them with great sucess. A no quit guy like me we got along well. He is really into this owens valley elk hunting and archery hunting in particular. I learned a lot on this hunt about elk (mostly through the failures on the hunt) and having them bugle right in your face is a real rush. I cannot wait until next fall already! With the points I have in so many states it is a realistic dream to hunt top quality hunts just about every year for the next 20 or so.
Don Nichols (Nickman) was a trip. I wish I could have had a tape recorder running through the entire week because our discussions ranged through so many things I could write a book. It is my opinion that this guy knows this ground and these animals habits better than any human alive. He is funny as shat, and we both agree that you just cannot take life too seriously. As he says, "if it aint funny, I dont see the reason to do it at all". I can now consider him a friend and gaining that this week was the most valuable event of the whole deal bar none. I am not sure if I told him or not to his face, (my apologies Don), but THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY. We should all support our military and our veterans and thank them at every opportunity as we would not be able to enjoy the freedoms we have like hunting if it were not for them.
Ok, I have to sign off for now as I cannot see through this wet stuff dripping down my face anymore. Look for more in Relentless 365.
Kevin

Lone Pine rifle bull

I was lucky enough to draw one of the Lone Pine rifle bull tags. Hope they get pushed to the river in October. Heading out this weekend to scout the zone and look for rutting bulls. I would love to use my bow in October but don't know how much pressure they will have by then. We'll just have to see. Hopefully the racks stay together for a few more weeks. Should be a great hunt.

Nim there are a couple of studs in that area. I know that there are 2 or 3 good 7x7, 7x6's there. There is one solid 6x6 still walking around in there as well and I don't think his rack could break with the mass he carries all the way out. Could score 260-270. Good luck, I too still might use the bow but may be limited with time. Kurt

Kevin, Congrats on that bull, I know you wanted 301 and sounds like you guys tried your butt off to get in on him, I too will try for 301 with the bow but if he is too spooky then out comes the boom stick. You guys put the hurt on them. All 5 guys drilled bulls with their archery gear. Way to go. Like you said sounds like you had a great time and that is what it is worth. I have everyone coming with me on my hunt. Kids, wife, dad, uncle, friends they all want to be there and have that experience and I think that is cool. Congrats again. Kurt

Not everyone will be in a line behind me on the stalk. I am talking about driving around and finding the herds, putting together a game plan and let everyone experience it, just hanging with the people you have in your life is where its at. Hanging out at camp will by far be the best group thing. When its time to stalk all eyes will be watching from a distance of 500 yards or more. I do need my space and focus. When its time to put meat on the table I PERSONALLY get into the zone and its is hard to focus on anything else. Something will die when that happens. If the stalk is blown those jack rabbits will need to run far away cause like I said something will die:confused:.

You mention that you may use a bow instead of a rifle. I was fortunate enough to draw a Bishop period three bull tag. I would like to use my muzzleloader instead of my 7mm, is this legal?

Thanks...doubleD

Last weekend scouting trip

I saw 8 bulls they are all rutting hard. Screaming all night and busting up sage bushes. The biggest bull is all broken up, looks like he has little shovels as the points are broken off. Still a couple of nice 6x6's. There movine quickly throughout the unit. Nobody else was around there. Mosquitos also ate me alive. Heard a few others I couldn't find in the tules. If you farted they would come in. Pretty cool weekend with the bulls

Nim sorry to hear of the busted bulls. I bet there will be one or two of the big guys that get through unbroken for the most part. Just keep scouting that area before you shoot. And YES bring bug spray. I hear that 100% deet and a Thermacell is the only way to go.

Double D like Nim said you have a General Hunt Tag which means that you can use a Rifle, Bow, Muzzleloader, or Crossbow if you want. I plan on taking the bow and if the bull are too spooky then I will be bring out my 300 Weatherby Mag. Good Luck and from what I know the Bishop herd is loaded at one time they had a Bachelor herd of bulls numbering 28 so look over all the bulls. Post up when you are done.
