Those were found off a 'pet' elk living behind a high fence in Utah. I think he spends most of his free time mounting a rubber cow aside from the usual watering, rolling around in a wallow, and feeding.
I'm not going to embarass myself (again) with my bad attitude banter, but didn't the current disease problem begin in an Elk Breeding program then spread to wild herds? Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe I read that somewhere. If it's true, that's reason enough to put an end to those operations. And here's the disclaimer...I'm not judging anyone choosing to hunt such places. Heck, after chasing the elusive blacktail for so long lord knows I've had impure thoughts!
I'm not aware of whether Max caught anything from the rubber cow yet or not...I know he's not the only bull to have had her and it was definately an 'unprotected' thing.
Seriously, there's so much debate on that subject, I really just don't know. Utah does have an extremely stringent permit process and a lot of regulations to prevent the spread of disease in captive/private herds.
Heck, if it weren't for captive herds, Elk wouldn't be thriving in the wild in as many places as they do today.
Even our very own DFG has more than one Elk pen--I trust they know what they're doing. Then again, there's something to be said about questioning authority...Anyway, if were such a bad thing, I think we'd have heard a lot more negative press on the subject. I'm for allowing it in a regulated manor as it is now.
I believe that CWD in parts of Canada came from elk brought in from CO for a game farm- also many believe current problems in Wisc came from NON Inspected deer/ elk brought to game farms--I believe also that MN cases have been on game farms also- me i say kep them in Texas.
CWD actually started with a group of WILD elk caught and held in a pen for a college endorsed study. They were infected with the virus purposely. Monitored and when no sign of symptons was found released back into the wild. Only after that it was found that it may take up to 5 yrs or more for the virus infected animal to show symptons.
There are so many versions as to the source of CWD no one seems to know for sure how it transmitted from Bovine to deer/elk ...BUT most knowledgeble people agreee to the above.
IMHO there is hunting for everyone, whether you prefer fence or not. Like I posted earlier, I DO hunt freerange elk. On a private ranch in MT with 25,000 acres of field crops. This is bordered by BLM land on 4 sides. The hunting isl in truth easy. I hunt from a permanate tree stand. Some may say this is not the "elk hunting" they do...fine I've backpacked into deep wilderness for 12 days and hauled the entire elk out on my back more than once too. But to me 25,000 acres is big enough.
