Made an early Fathers Day trip to the ranch. Started out walking a road along a ridge at about 6 pm when I spotted a pair of nice bucks grazing and stopped to watch them. After a few minutes I noticed some movement on the far side of the valley and watched as two sows emerged from the grass. I thought about taking a shot from there, but I was about 175 yards out and as they didn't appear to be in a hurry and the wind was with me I decided to drop down into the valley for a closer shot. I did so, but then couldn't see them and was afraid they'd busted me, but then saw movement in the grass to my left around where the bucks had been. The grass was about 2' deep, but I could see a long black tail swishing and realized that they'd moved to the other side of the valley about 75 yards out. I set up and soon had a nice broadside shot with my 30-06. I heard the bullet impact, but couldn't see the pig drop due to the grass. Started walking slowly toward her when I heard movement to my left and there was the other sow on the other side of the valley where I'd first seem them. Surprisingly, the shot hadn't spooked her as she was walking directly toward me without any apparent concern, so I just waited a bit till she was 25 yards away and turned slightly so I could get a broadside shot and dropped her.
Both were really nice sows, 125 lbs for the black one and 100 for the black and white. Sure a lot easier to skin than the big boars I'd gotten recently. I gave one to a friend and took the other to the butcher. Will make for nice chops for a 4th of July BBQ!
