My hunting partner and I were ready to shoot a hog so we'd have pork to go with our venison grind. We went in to one of our favorite areas and at the first overlook we spotted a hog working a stock tank. We ID'd him as a boar so I got the rifle and headed down the hill. I couldn't get too close as the wind was shifting a bit so I set up about 170 yards out. I had brought my Ruger No. 1 in 7mm rem mag as it hadn't killed anything in a few years. I settled into the sticks and when he turned broadside I gave him a 150 gr. TSX handload. Steve was watching from the top of the hill and saw a huge cloud of dirt fly off of him. He bolted into the brush line about fifty yards away and Steve saw the brush shaking. I walked down and found good blood and Steve vectored me over to the brush patch. I went in with a round chambered and the safety off 'cause I felt I pulled the shot just a bit. He was down and dead. Turned out I had--about 4 inches further back, but the bullet exited right behind the off elbow taking out a bunch of important stuff along the way. He was covered in mud and gutted out at 122 lbs. It was an easy drag and we continued on for another hour of hunting, with one more spotted.
When I started down the hill after the shot I got no more than ten yards when the wind shifted around directly from me to him. It's a good thing I stopped when I did.
Now we can do sausage and hams!
