lol thats to funny. My dad used to tell us we could wash it off if we needed too. Not sure that works and the water in the river was so dam cold. He may have been messing with us kids. Since i have never got a pig. I may go in after it also and try to wahs off as soon as i could. ig-laughing:

Trying to go hunting mid next week but cant seem to make up our mind as far as location. We have been looking at Carrizo and VAFB. Any suggestions and by the way its three military active duty guys.

Well, it's your call; but I would vote for VAFB. Be aware there will be a closure basewide on the 8th and 9th for base ops. We ought to start seeing more movement after the full moon and the weather (hopefully) cooling off. Rain in the forecast for Thursday, so that ought to help too. If you go, bring a rifle and a muzzleloader or sabot shooting shotgun and it's copper only. When you check in to Conservation, there is a $50 fee in cash and you need an orange hat or vest.

When you decide to come up, PM me and I'll try to give you some general pointers. It's a big area and a lot of hunters will bring a rifle, a shotgun or muzzleloader and a bow to take advantage of the area restrictions. Different areas produce at different times depending on food source and water. I work at the Main Exchange running the gun counter so you can come by and see me.

We are actually planing on going the weekd end of the 9-11. We are active duty and about to deploy so our timeline is tight but we have that week end off so we are trying to do some scouting and actually hunt between Nov 23-03 Dec. Is there a better time for you? If so we can try and work with you. PM me if you have any questions or coments.

As far as Rifle Cal what would you recommend for the area?

A .270, 7mm rem mag, 30-06, .300 win mag would all be good. In truth a 30-30 would do the job and you can usually get close enough to shoot 'em in the lips if you want. Don't bring a .243 or a 5.56. A .50 caliber muzzleloader will do a fine job. Just use enough gun and remember to shoot copper.

Dam that really kills our plans because thats all we really have. .223 and .243 F#@&*. We are marines we will improvise.............

You can do it with a .243, but you have to be absolutely on and be prepared to chase it into the thick and nasty. If that's all you have then use it. I would suggest you not shoot a big boar with a plate but a smaller hog, under 100 lbs. would be fine. The problem is IMO hogs are the hardest animal to judge size. You almost have to "ground check" 'em to really know. With the exception of REALLY big or really small hogs. You see a big one and you know. I am of the opinion that you should always carry a rifle prepared for the largest animal you might find, and there are some 300+ pounders out there.......

Go big or go home. In Sept I shot a hog that weighed 80 dressed, so it was probably 110 on the hoof. She sucked up three 495gr steel 12 guage slugs before finally going down. The first one was an inch below the spine, broke some rips and rolled her over. She still got up and I had to give chase. For awhile there, it was even money if I was going to catch up.

Hogs are alot tougher than folks realize and in brushy terrain, easy to lose.
