I think I heard Dilxpro using a hog call last year, when my truck started sliding off the cliff. It must have worked too, because while we were sitting there trying to figure out how to get out of that mess, a whole herd of pigs came out on the hillside across the canyon.
Seriously, though... there's a thread about this every spring. I still don't know anyone who's really used one. I used a deer grunt in South Carolina last year to draw a boar toward me (at least it seemed like he was coming to investigate). Unfortunately, a truck pulled up just as he came in range.
I haven't had much luck with them. But friends that have say if the hogs are close-by they'll work.In-Heat scents are often used by the callers.I used the tapes and feeding fenzy has worked for me but I've never called one in with a mouth blow call.......but the day I do.....I don't care if it's a sickly little boar.....I'll be proud.
I used a hog grunt tube in Texas when I was making a racket trying to walk through some pretty thick stuff. I heard a occasional grunt will make them think you are pigs coming.
I did manage to walk right up on a couple in the thick stuff. don't know if the grunting was the reason why but it didn't hurt.
Dang pigs scared the stuffing out of me when they jumped up 15 feet in front of me. It was so thick I was carrying a shotgun with slugs.
I've used 'em, but I figure either I scare them off or there isn't any pigs around because I aint never seen them come after it. The day I see a bunch of pigs will be the day I can answer this question. -Maybe someone out there has pigs on there farm that they try them on and record there reaction.
I have READ but not experienced that if you're going for a shot on a hog that hasn't seen you and it's trotting along if you give a grunt it will stop in it's tracks to listen and smell. Just long enough for you to center, exhale and squeeze... But I've only read that.
I've hunted with a guy who states that a "wounded rabbit" (Coyote call) will work if you use it in a way that makes it sound like a squeeling piglet. Says there's a way to cup your hands to duplicate the sound. I personally haven't seen it in action but he says the hogs will rush forward in bursts to investigate the "piglet in trouble".
Don't know for sure though. I'd be too afraid to screw up a hunt for me and my friends.
I just got back from trying to call in a hog with the piglet in distress and feeding frenzy tapes.....no luck. I called from a stand that I put up yesterday in a clearing that I've been cutting on for a couple of weeks....not the best spot in the world. But I've seen too much rooting near my traps to call over there......and take a chance of spooking them off. It should take a few weeks for the pigs to accept all the changes I have made to thier home. But I think I'll do alittle calling every evening anyway. If you go out enough times you will kill something. If I get a good moon then I can call all night. Anyway the hog calling post made me remimber why I bought the calls and tapes for in the first place.......So I could learn to call pigs in and what the limitations are........can't do that if I don't use them so......At least for a little while I'll do some calling and see what happens.
Ive used both the feeding call and the squeeling piglet call and they both worked great. IF you have a pack of pigs feeding in the distance it is possible to turn them your direction and lead them to you with the feeding grunt call. The squeeler works when pigs get spooked or scattered they will come running back to it..
Shot ,you aught to see what I can call in using a duck call.............Give you a guess it's never ducks.......Coyotes,bobcats,fox,baggers,and racoons like my calling........but the ducks must get offended by what I say to them. I don't call nothing in with a duck call.
