Hog Calling?

Yesterday while at work I was driving out on a backroad that we use, and saw two nice hogs down about 150 yds off the road.
We stop and have a look. They are feedin and moving up hill. I tell my co-worker that I will call them up to us. He looks at me
and says Really?. Anyway I begin to start grunting and sure enough they stop and look up towards us and start moving up the hill.
I keep it up for a number of times and then I notice that the wind is not good, It is moving from behind me and across in front of the
Hogs. I tell my co-worker that this is not good that they will smell us. And sure enough they get to about 50 yds from us and stop.
The lead hog rises his head and then turns a 180 off they go. I have not used the calling while actually hunting, but it sure worked
real well this time. Has anyone use this method? Have you been with a guide and has he/she done this? Very thilling to say the least.

I never have but heard about this before. Looks like you were in the Patterson area with that kind of country.

Hello land4cat looks like you are still seeing them; me too seen one last Thursday in that area you told me about and three more across the road on Monday with a bunch of piglets. Also seen a small group of Elk right down the road; I think across from your work. That’s a cool that you were able to get them to come up to you; have not seen or tried it before. Heres a coupe pictures of the ones I seen. The one just keep rooting and the three with piglets slowly headed for the hills.

Those hogs aren't getting much pressure are they? Seems like they feel pretty safe out in the open like that.

If it's the area I think it is they spend there whole lives out in the open and the area is all owned by one guy except for a very small parcel in the middle that is owned by retired firefighter.

I think this is off Hwy84 near the Livermore Lab. I seen them there all the time.

The Site 300 off of Corral Hollow Rd. Near the Connolly Ranch. The Elk are hidden upper portion of that Ranch until summer .
Moskinyca, We see the Hogs mostly in the morngings and later afternoon. What time do you go by the Site? The Photos look like
you took them just past the Carnegie Motocylce Park. Have you seen the Turkeys on the State land between the site and the
fireworks company? There has been about thirty of them out each late Afternoon when I leave.

We have some land outside of Colinga that is family owned, mainly for oil rights, and is identical in terrain as the areas in these pictures.............I never figured to look for pigs on this property as that it seemed too open, dry, and without any brush cover which I thought was mandatory for pig habitat............I may need to make another visit to this property and investigate further..........Don

I'm with you, time to check it out. Imagine having some private land to hunt piggies! When are we going? After turkey season? It may be time to check out the property in Monterey County as well.

Ya, the Monterey property is probably the best bet being adjacent to Lake San Antonio and FHL, wouldnt be surprised to find out that other principal owning partner hasn't already leased out hunting rights to the area.

Now would be the best time to visit the area before summer temps arrive...............Don

I have gotten the hogs to stop with grunts before. It made it easier to get closer but the wind has always made them run off. Scents seem to out do me everytime. Maybe with grunts and more hunters??? Seeing hogs in a field would be crazy. I have only heard them in the ditch or in a creekbed under cover. Soon very very soon.
