6x.284 lately but for years a .264 win mag did the deed.

Remington 700 Mountain Gun with Leopuld 3.5x 10 in 30.06 stoked with 180gr Sierra Gamekings has taken most of my recent ones.

Picked up a Remington 700 35 Whelen at the end of last year, hoping to break it in formally on the May Ham Slam

Heckler & Koch 770 in .308 with Leopold 3.5 - 10 x 50. 180gr Noslers. It worked in Tejon last year.
Sporterized Mauser in 30-06 with a Ted Williams scope worked just as well a couple of years back.
This is the year of the levergun though, a Marlin in 45/70. Tejon here we come.

It really depends on the terrain I'm hunting.

Last time I used my BowTech with 3 blade Montecs :)

If I'm facing longer shots/canyons/open area I use my Springfield 1903-a3 in 30-06 or my Winchester Shadow Supreme in 300wsm.

If I have to hunt close brush where speed is #1 priority, it's either my Mini14 with a nice fat front blade fire-site and a rear williams peep.

But usually I prefer my .44 mag S&W 629 stainless Revolver 5.5" barrel, accompanied by my Marlin 1894 lever action rifle, also in .44 mag.

Powerman,

You owe me a story on this if you ever got to use it. I'm confident you would. I've not seen anyone with a sharp eye for game as you when you spotted the profile of a deer in semi dark forest which is nearly invisible to me.

I've seen this rifle and I was drooling.

How far can you confidently shoot it?

I haven't used it on game yet, but with a good rest, 150yds shouldn't be a problem for the lever revolution ammo. I had the holes touching at 100 yds. Hopefully we'll see next month. I'm bringing the boy this time, so he gets the shot on anything up close.

Marlin 45-70.......it is a howitzer and it kicks like a cannon when shooting with hot loads. Very accurate too. Definitely a keeper.......will topple all kinds of legal to hunt North American game up to American Buffalo and Brown Bears. You will love the intimidating large muzzle opening that looks like it will swallow a cigar. You just know that with hot loads you are not undergunned no matter what game comes up on the trail. It is also a superb brush gun.........you touch a round and it will plow through brush and kill. Tremendous penetration.....I just love it. 'Nuff said.

I use my dogs to get up close and personal, and then a Ruger Blackhawk .357 to apply the coup de grace. I plan to upgrade to a lever action carbine in either .45-70 or .44-40 at some point in the near future.

Curious how your 22-250 with partitions worked on the hog? Thanks

Daddy63,
First shot was not the best angle, but it slowed him down. Second shot was a head shot which finished the job. I would only recommend using the 22-250 on hogs if you have a good opportunity of shot placement....prefect broadside.

On the other hand, I have a buddy who took his 22-250 with a 60 gr Partition to Africa and brought down several plains game with one shot.

Thanks for the response. In the right hands I'm sure it's adequate but maybe for a beginner it wouldn't be the best idea. Thanks a lot.

First and only boar with the 12ga. firing slugs, but my .300wsm desperately wants to get in on the action, so that's what I take with now...

It was my Remington Model 7 in 300SAUM using 180gr Partitions. With the lead ban, it's now going to be my 6.5x55. It's an M96 sporterized by Kimber. I've got a bunch of 30cal bullets, and I was running low on 129gr Hornady's for the Swede. I just ordered a bunch of 130gr Triple Shocks to satisfy the need for a lead free gun.

TD, that flat base 130 gr. TSX is an awesome bullet.

If the planets align right this year, I'm going to build a lightweight 6.5-06 around that pill.

Thanks Rancho for the encouragement. I've heard a lot of good things about the TSX. It's too bad I've got to switch. The Hornady is a really good bullet in that rifle, and reasonably priced too. Good luck on that rifle. I've heard the 6.5-06 is a real performer.
