Well, after having a sit down discussion with myself and realizing i suck shooting a rifle, i knew it was time to pick the bow back up and see if ol' Hank and myself could track down a few hogs. We hit DP Canyon early, leaving the house at 2:30am, and getting there just before first light. There was a heavy frost, so i set off by myself, with Hank left to guard the truck.

The morning hunt was pretty good and i got close on two groups of hogs, 55 yards on a decent boar that had a slight limp. I really thought about running after the hog and seeing if could bay him up, but figure that'd be pretty stupid with my bow. (remember the 'stupid' part for later in the story)

It was nearing noon and i'd seen roughly a dozen or so hogs, so i decided to head for higher ground and see if could find any mid-day feeders out. The first hill had a commanding view of the area and it took only a few minutes to find a large group of hogs feeding on a long ridge line. To hike there, it'd of taken close to an hour, so jumping in the truck and 20 minutes later, Hank and myself were on the same ridge.

There was an old logging road that ran down the spine of the ridge and nearing the area where i hoped the hogs would still be, i counted roughly a dozen of'em. Two hogs were on the left side of the spine and 10 on the right, with a very large boar breeding the sows and creating havoc with the smaller boars. The wind was blowing right to left, so i figured i'd ease off the spine, go left in the timber and try to kill one of the two hogs on the left side, then bump over the top and shoot the boar......well, in my mind that's what i was wanting to do.

Now fast forward a few minutes and i've got a 130lb sow at 41 yards behind a tree....she starts to move left and i'm at full draw, she's quartering away slightly and i hold my pin tight and low to the shoulder. The arrow hits hard and as the hog is running away, i see blood pumping out of the left side....dead hog i'm thinking
<

Knocking another arrow, i can hear the hogs squealing over the side of the ridge, so easing over, i can see them in the timber moving around, feeding. I ease up to 40 yards and all the hogs are roughly 175lbs, so picking out the boar wasn't easy.....we played cat and mouse for a while and i finally got the boar, who has just spotted me, broadside at 42yrds. At full draw and slightly downhill, i squeeze the trigger and at the same time, he begins to spin. The arrow is flying high and goes deep in his back (front to back), just missing his ear as he's now facing me. He's a big boar and i know that shot isn't even close to where it needs to be
<
, needless to say, i'm not happy.

I can hear the boar down below me, thrashing around and walking thru the brush, so i back out and head up to the first hog. The blood trail is incredible and i'm thinking heart shot, so i walk and follow it as it crests the ridge line. Just ahead, maybe 15 yards, i can see a hog bedded down, but i'm not thinking it's the first hog i shot, 'cause she's gotta be dead. So i whistle, the hogs stands and i see blood pumping out the right side.....by this time, the hog knows i'm there, turns and is now facing me at 15 yards. So in my mind, i'm kinda thinking, she's gonna charge.....but i don't give'er a chance and send an arrow into her skull.

I leave her there and head back to the truck to give the boar some time to expire, or bed up, get some help and grab my rifle.....'cause i know if i find'em, he's gonna be alive and pretty pissed.

The boar wasn't bleeding a drop, but i could follow his tracks pretty good in the soft dirt. After following tracks for a while, i jumped him just ahead, maybe 20 yards. So i took off running after him as hard as i could, figure i'll either run'em down, or he'll bay up.

As i hit the creek bottom, i could see the boar paralleling the small dry creek, so i hauled ass on the other side. We ran for a few minutes and he finally saw me and stopped. There was lots of brush, so i aimed the 7mm on his shoulder and at the shot, he ran in the creek. I moved ahead another hundred yards, looked to the right and the boar was 20 yards away, looking right at me, popping his teeth.

The cross hairs where hovering just above his ears and he dropped at the shot.

Not a bad day

Thank ya sir. Yeah, i haven't been to Sonoma in a few years, there's a few other public spots that i think are better and get less pressure.

Thanks Mike! Yeah, i'm bummed i didn't get Hank in the pics, i had'em in the truck, was in a hurry to get pics taken and with two hogs to skin, i was short on time. He did get out and bark at'em a few times, and made his second blind retreive.....now this one, i'm very proud of; he's the master of picking up spent shells, he found one of my empy 7mm shells, picked it up, brought it over to me and dropped it at my feet. A wothless skill, but he enjoys it.

Very nice AS! Great story and pics once again.

I have yet to connect on a hog (I second your opinion regarding Lake Sonoma), but your decision to finish things off with the rifle was a wise choice in my book.

Thanks Rotor...yeah, i'd of never got that boar with my bow. It's amazing to see what those animals can withstand. Even the sow, she lost a ton of blood and was still alive after 15 minutes with enough spunk to wanna fight and the boar, he ate alot of lead. My first arrow shot on him, the arrow went the length of his body, exiting his rear leg and going thru high in his chest cavity, then blowing half his neck off, and he was still going strong. The boar was missing an ear and had scars all over his face, he was a fighter, even to the end.
