Hi Gabe,

Welcome to JHP. Relax, pull up a log, and enjoy the conversation.

I'm not a regular to FHL, but several of the guys here seem to live there... or at least spend an awful lot of time roaming the grounds. I'm sure they'll chime in as work and life let them get back to the board.

In the meantime, you might wanna use the Search function to look through and see all the threads pertaining to your questions. I believe all of them have been answered once or twice over the years and there's a ton of info about FHL on this forum.

Good luck!

Also, when posting to a Internet discussion board learn how to use the Caps-Lock key. How you present your question is just as important as the question.

FHL is a beautiful place, with lots of areas to explore. It is FAR from being anything resembling a 'hot spot' for pigs though....

Camping is prohibited in the training areas (or elsewhere), except the designated campground by the wildlife check station (no hunting allowed there). Posession or consumption of alcohol, and any sort of a fire is strictly prohibited in any of the training (hunting) areas.

Make sure that you call ahead to make sure that training areas are open for hunting, so you don't waste a trip. To hunt there, you have to mail in your application for a voucher (I believe $25 for a weekend, or $70 annual) in advance. In a couple of weeks, they will mail you the voucher. When you get there, you have to check in with the wildlife check station (during operating hours. There could be a line), presenting your voucher, and choose which training area you will be hunting. Then, you are given a 'permit' specific to that area. A copy of the permit goes on your person, another copy goes behind the windshield of your car, and they keep one copy.
After you are done hunting, you have to 'check out' and turn in your permits.

Make SURE that you obey ALL RULES AND REGULATIONS, of not only hunting in California, but regulations specific to FHL as well, as they ARE strictly enforced, and the 'Federal Police', which often also doubles as the Game Warden can often be less than friendly.

Also make sure that you have valid license, registration, and proof of insurance.

I used to frequent FHL quite a bit, but I do not anymore. In my case, it is 500 miles round trip (from Thousand Oaks, CA), so the fuel cost + voucher are just shy of $100 per trip. Given all the 'check in', 'check out', and all the other hassles, combined with the fact that the success rate is real low for hogs (same as other public lands), and the costs, I believe that there are many other closer 'no-hassle' alternatives.

Many aruge that at least someone gets into the hogs almost every weekend..... Well, you have to consider how many hunters are out there as well. Even if the place looks empty (which often doesn't), there are still quite a few hunters scattered in the training areas.

It can be productive for quail and rabbits though. However, if you are thinking about going there for deer... Think twice! During deer season, the place looks like a zoo. Hunters around every corners, road hunters driving up and down the dirt roads with their 4X4's, etc.

All that said, still it is some beautiful country out there.

Gabe,

You might want to try the Tejon ranch PigORama hunts. It's not free ($300 per hunter) but the success rate is usually very good. At least for rifle hunters. Not sure how bow hunters do there. Check out the JHP Events forum for more info on upcoming hunts.

As to FHL, if you're bowhunting, you'll have access to the better areas (29, 30, and 3). Areas 29 and 30 are primitive weapons onlyl (bow, shotgun, muzzleloader). Area 3 is bow only.

As was mentioned, do a quick search or just look through the threads here in the hog hunting forum for lots more info on FHL.

Gabe:
What Shaginator is trying to point out is that writing in all capital letters is considered "yelling" on the net. Ussually only done when angry, or trying to get a point across.

Actually Gabe, there are a bunch of us in this forum and the Internet who don't approve of people typing in capital letters or bold type. Why? It's considered shouting on the Internet and it's harder to read. That's why if you'll recall, we were never taught in school to write or type in capital letters or bold type. I'd suggest you take the hint and hit that cap key.

Just a courtesy reminder. But heck, if it made someone laugh, all the better. I mean, what's wrong with putting a little sunshine into someone's heart, right?

As I said it's a "courtesy reminder". Nobody's stopping you from using all-caps, but I'll say that, if you follow convention, a lot more people will actually read your post, which improves odds you'll get a helpful response.

As for hogs: Based on the info I've gathered here on the forum, Tejon Ranch is the one place relatively close to So. Cal. that will give you decent odds of success. It's also one of the most discussed places on this forum, so dig in!

I have to concur on Tejon ranch as far as having opportunity. The hog I shot last year was about 20 yards out, so I guess that would be a good shot for someone with a bow. Just make it a good one. My hog was still kicking and tryiong to get up after getting hit with a 150 gr from a 300 winmag at 20 yards. Believe me, you don't want your hog getting up at Tejon with all those hell holes around.

Dont let these guy decide for you, if you rifle hunt , they are probably right , but bowhunting is awsome , but then again maybe you shouldnt go , that way I can have it all to myself. Needless to say im not going to tell you how many and where but you should go take a look.

Hi Gabe,

Just wanted to drop you a note to repeat what several of the guys have already (some not so tactfully) mentioned. It's common etiquette on a web forum to use proper capitalization, or at least to avoid all-caps.

All-caps is perceived as shouting, and silly as it sounds, a lot of folks (including me) do find it distracting. Everybody was a newbie once and didn't know better. But once you've been informed, it's usually to your own benefit to take that advice to heart. You're probably not gonna get kicked off the list for it, but the quality and quantity of responses you're going to get will reflect the quality of your own attitude.

There are a lot of good guys on this forum, and all of them could probably give you more useful information about hog hunting and FHL than a library full of books. But if you wanna be hard-headed just to aggravate them, no one needs a lot of incentive to tune you out.

So how about it? Give a little, get a lot... that's how it can work.

Cheers.

It sounds like you've got 100 better things to do than hang around JHP asking us "sissys" for info.
