Im posting this out of desperation and frustration. Im looking for a legit place to hog hunt. Im new to this and I understand a hunter always try to protect their hunting grounds, but ive been stone walled everywhere I turn. Im not looking to take over a spot nor just wanting to kill i wont kill what i wont eat. I would love the opertunity to take my kids on a adventure that will stick with them forever. Im a honest and respectful adult who just wants to enjoy the outdoors and have the chance to harvest a hog now and again. the guide services are ok but the are well over price considering this is a pest not a top class trophy animal plus im not a rich man if im going to pay that much for a hog ill just buy one from a FFA student at lease then you know you got a grain fed well fed animal. So if you believe you can help me out or point me in the right direction fell free to contact me ....

Hunting is no longer cheap or free to play anymore. If you think a $500 hog hunt is over priced and you can't afford one, you are still stone walling yourself. You may have to play the lotto more often if you are lucky enough to get free access to any private land that holds hogs. Public land could cost you 3x 4x or even 10x more than $500 before you can laid eyes on a hog let alone killing it. Even so you pay greatly on burning boot leather, not so easy if you are not in decent physical shape. If you are asking to be point in the direction so you can start burning boot leather on your way to find hogs, then send me a pm and I'll give you some points to start. If you are asking for a cheap outing, bag a hog, and repeat again, then all I can do is wish you the best of luck.

I am also new to hog hunting in CA (and from am the central valley). I can tell you that I've spent more than enough to pay for a guide or to hunt private land just gas money to drive to pulic land to try and find pigs!

I just upgraded my boots because I plan on finding some pigs one of these weekends and know that I will have to put a lot of time in them in order to do it. I found lots of leads on this forum (thanks everyone) and will let you all know when I do score a hog.

I would never take my kids on a hog hunt its just too dangerous I would do it only if they were tleast in high school. Hogs will attack even after being shot ask any seasoned hunter. With that being said $500 isn't a bad price I've gone to the sme hunting area 5x this season and have not yet seen a pig but I have seen tracks and seen people take pigs out of there. Take some time to go through the hog hunting section on the forum and you will find out which areas hold pigs and which areas don't. I know people don't like giving away their hunting spots but I guarantee you its alredy posted anyways good luck hunting

Here's your cheapest, most efficient, fun and a chance to kill a hog, option: Tejon Pig Management Hunt. It's still gonna cost you (bout $450.00 each), but you get 2 1/2 days of fun on an awesome piece of land....and a fairly good chance to shoot a wild pig. You could also try Lake Sonoma, bit it takes more planning, more time and a small boat - and much smaller odds of a kill. Good luck.

Don't be afraid to take your kids or be afraid to pay a little. I have the fortune to hunt on a couple private ranches for free but I can see how public land hunting would add up in cost and surpass a ranch hunt in the long run. There are plenty of ranches in the Redbluff, Cottonwood area that charge about 400-500 $ for the weekend with a high probability of success, the ranch I hunt I believe charges 450$ and we see pigs every time we go out. 500$ isn't bad considering a deer hunt will cost you 6x that and they are running around everywhere on public land. Good luck!

All the new tv shows depict hogs as being blood thirsty animals, they are just like any other animal where 95% of the time they run away. I plan on taking my new born son hunting as soon as I can regardless of the species. If you bow hunt look into Lake sanoma it is by far the best place to hunt hogs on public land. I live in the central valley as well if you want to hit up the Lake I will be more than happy to show you around. As far a Tejon Ranch goes the is the mecca of hog hunting for me. I love that place. I am putting together 2 management hunts this year one on april and the other in May. Depending on how old your kids are the cost is 450.00 for adults and 250.00 for juniors. Also listen to whatever Lives2hunt says, he is a pig hunting master!

any questions shoot me a pm.

Oh O.......Lives2hunt is now a pig hunting master. I guess there is no role for live2hunt now. By the way, my boat will be ready for Lake in a couple week. When are we going?

There is limited opportunity for taking central valley pigs on public property. Lots of ranchers don't want the hassle and liabilities of charging folks to hunt on their property, but...there are a few good ol boy ranchers who will allow you to tresspass on their property full of hogs(especially if you tell them you are taking your boys). Finding them will take lots of time and effort, and you may have to ask more than once to get permission.

Contact the BLM office in Hollister and get the BLM land maps for the areas you would like to hunt, or go online and buy the GPS program that shows private/public land on your hand held GPS. DO NOT HUNT AREAS THAT YOU DONT KNOW LAND OWNERSHIP. Burn the gas and get out and hunt, the more you go the more chance of getting a hog. If you are heading to Coalinga again know where the public land is, You need the maps or a GPS unit to know for sure. Learn the areas and be respectfull of the land, always leave it better than what you found. Pick up your and others empty's and trash and enjoy the time out doors.
