Me and my friend just got our hunting licenses and are going hunting next weekend. We live in LA county and we were wondering where the best public lands for hunting might be? Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Man I'm really confused. I've been looking into places like Cottonwood Creek WA and places near there, Caliente Mnt, Coalinga, and some other places. Do I need to send in for a permit before hand? Or can i just walk on the day i get there? I keep reading different things.

If you go on the Hog/Javalina Hunting Forum, you'll be able to read a lot about where and when to go. Start there, and then let me know if you need help. I live in Pasadena, and I've gotten two so far on this year's license, going for a third the 20th.

Maybe 300 hogs total for SD County. You'll kill yourself trying to find them.

VAFB has a decent population of hogs but they're mostly nocturnal. Springs the best time to hunt there because the vegitation is low. I went the last week in Apr and the growth was already almost too high. By now, the mustard will be 7-8 feet high and you'll never see 'em in that stuff. Besides, hunting is still secured at VAFB.

Now Camp Roberts and FHL is open to the public and many, many more hogs come out of those two places then VAFB. King county has always been the big winner in CA.

I Live 20 min away from Camp Roberts, its a good place to go. Call in advance to make sure they are open. Coalinga also has decent hog hunting, just make sure you are not on the private property that surrounds the BLM. No pemit needed.

How exactly does it work on Camp Roberts? I know the public can hunt there and there's a permit system...but that's all I know.

In another post I saw totals for pigs in different counties and Kern looked par excellence. Anybody got a clue as to where to find hogs up there?

Hi Deerman,

I just applied for a permit for Camp Roberts for the opening big game day in August. But I was thinking, if pig season is open year around, can't I hunt pig, lets say, this week end at CR? I know they use it for maneuvers but I guess the question is can I just walk on and hunt other week ends besides the permitted ones?

Much obliged,
drypowder
